DODGERS NOTEBOOK: KARROS SIDELINED BY BACK STRAIN.

Byline: Brian Dohn Staff Writer

VERO BEACH Vero Beach (vēr`o), city (1990 pop. 17,350), seat of Indian River co., E Fla., on Indian River (a lagoon and part of the Intracoastal Waterway); founded c.1888, inc. 1919. , Fla. - With the fiasco of left fielder Gary Sheffield's trade demand, the last thing the Dodgers needed to see was a player report to spring training with an injury.

But first baseman Eric Karros
Eric Peter Karros (born November 4, 1967 in Hackensack, New Jersey) is a former American baseball player who played in Major League Baseball from 1991-2004. Karros attended UCLA, where he receieved a degree in economics. Karros played his first MLB game on September 1, 1991.
won't participate in manager Jim Tracy's first full-squad workout today because of a back strain. Karros had trouble bending and clearly isn't ready to swing a bat or field ground balls.

``We're going to hold him out of workout Tuesday and continue to evaluate him,'' Dodgers general manager Kevin Malone

     said.

The Dodgers believe the back strain won't keep Karros out long, but there is concern because he has had trouble with his back in the past. Last season, Karros needed cortisone cortisone (kôr`tĭsōn'), steroid hormone whose main physiological effect is on carbohydrate metabolism. It is synthesized from cholesterol in the outer layer, or cortex, of the adrenal gland under the stimulation of adrenocorticotropic  shots to relieve the pain.

A team official said Karros was experiencing back pain before he left Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  on Sunday on a red-eye for Dodgertown.

--Bonding with Brownie: Between readying for the season, buying a house in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  and contemplating whether to sell his home in Sarasota, Fla., Tracy took time in mid-January to go quail hunting with Kevin Brown The name Kevin Brown can refer to several different people, including the following:
    • Kevin Brown (baseball) (b. 1965), a former Major League Baseball right-handed starting pitcher with 211 career wins
    • Kevin D. Brown (b.
and first-year pitching coach Jim Colborn in Georgia.

``I think communication is a very, very vital element in the success or failure in any situation,'' Tracy said. ``It was an opportunity to get Jim Colborn to spend a little time with him. To sit, chat and relax with him.''

Brown, who reported Sunday to Dodgertown, said he appreciated the gesture.

``It's hard to put a quantitative value (on the importance of it), but it's a chance to meet Jim before you get down here,'' Brown said. ``It's an opportunity to sit and yak.''

--Lefty in bullpen: Jesse Orosco is the leading candidate to emerge from spring training as the situational lefty in the bullpen, providing the 21-year veteran is healthy. Orosco said there's no problem with his elbow, making him the leading candidate over nonroster invitees Matt Whisenant, Todd Rizzo, Eddie Priest, Yorkis Perez and Jim Morris and 40-man roster members Onan Masaoka and Jeff Williams.

``It feels like the same old arm,'' Orosco said. ``Everything is fine. I don't see it being a problem.''
