David Allen Johnson (born January 30 1943) in Orlando, Florida is a former second baseman and manager in Major League Baseball. Johnson played for the Baltimore Orioles (1965-1972), Atlanta Braves (1973-1975), Philadelphia Phillies (1977-78) and Chicago Cubs (1978).

For other people named Gary Sheffield, see Gary Sheffield (disambiguation).

Gary Antonian Sheffield (born November 18, 1968 in Tampa, Florida) is a Major League Baseball designated hitter and outfielder for the Detroit Tigers.
, who enjoys playing for Johnson and is a staunch supporter of him.

``I've asked for advice how to handle this situation,'' Sheffield said. ``I've got to be with a team and an organization that I can be comfortable with. If you look at my situation, I have a lot of decisions I have to make. And Davey not being here, that's one question that would come up.

``I talked about it with my wife. I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

what it would be like without Davey. I don't want to think about it. That's where it gets kind of touchy with me.''

Sheffield has known Johnson since the mid-1980s, when his uncle, Dwight Gooden
Dwight Eugene Gooden (born November 16, 1964 in Tampa, Florida), also known as Doc Gooden or Dr. K, is a former major league baseball player. He was one of the most dominant and feared pitchers in the National League in the middle and late 1980s, but his career
, pitched for Johnson with the Mets. Sheffield was constantly around those ballclubs and has always said Johnson treated him fairly, and has been more than just a manager to him.

Sheffield, who led the majors with 37 homers heading into Monday's game at Florida, said recently that players had to take on much of responsibility for the team's play, stating Johnson shouldn't bear the brunt of the load.

``People don't know how much a manager means to certain people,'' Sheffield said. ``That's one of the biggest things. I feel very lucky to be playing for this manager. I feel like I can say things to him and he can say things to me. We have a good working relationship and Davey is all about winning.''

Johnson acknowledged that questions of his pending status infiltrated the clubhouse and was causing a distraction, and he said the proclamation that no changes would be made before the end of the season did ease tensions.

``I was sensing some negative stuff in here,'' Johnson said. ``That's what was my concern a little bit the other day. That's not healthy for (the players), as individuals, and as a group. . . . That's left.''

However, the issue of Johnson's status isn't dead. Rather, it's been put aside.

While Johnson, who is under contract for $1.5 million next season, will remain for the rest of the season, his long-term future remains in question. If the Dodgers don't reach the playoffs, Johnson likely won't return for a third year, despite being under contract.

But a big reason Malone made his statements was the Dodgers' standing. They entered Monday 4 1/2 games behind In sports, the phrase games behind, often abbreviated as GB in tables, is a common way to reflect the gap between a leading team and another team in a sports league, conference, or division.  San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  in the National League West, and the organization wanted all the focus to be on baseball instead of a ``death'' watch.

``My job is not going to be any easier,'' Johnson said. ``An eight-game winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins
