DODGERS NOTEBOOK: JOHNSON: TEAM NEEDS 12TH PITCHER.

Byline: Brian Dohn Daily News Staff Writer

When asked about the ideal roster, Dodgers manager Davey Johnson
David Allen Johnson (born January 30 1943) in Orlando, Florida is a former second baseman and manager in Major League Baseball. Johnson played for the Baltimore Orioles (1965-1972), Atlanta Braves (1973-1975), Philadelphia Phillies (1977-78) and Chicago Cubs (1978).
said he erred at the beginning of the season and should have carried 12 pitchers instead of 11. He also said five outfielders and six infielders is the way to go now.

The need for another outfielder - the Dodgers carry four - comes from center fielder Devon White's slowly progressing hamstring. He injured it Sunday but said he won't be able to play until Saturday in St. Louis at the earliest.

It leaves the Dodgers with three healthy outfielders and Johnson feeling vulnerable.

However, if Johnson wants a fifth outfielder, he might have to cut back on his wish for 12 pitchers.

``I think we'd like to have the fifth outfielder, but there doesn't seem to be a way to accomplish that with the 12th pitcher,'' Dodgers general manager Kevin Malone

said. ``You can't have 12 and then five.''

It's because the Dodgers lack flexibility on the roster, particularly in the infield.

    Pinch-hitter Dave Hansen

is too valuable to be traded. Jose Vizcaino provides versatility by playing three infield positions and hitting from both sides of the plate.

And Johnson has liked Tripp Cromer Roy Bunyan Cromer III (born November 21, 1967, in Lake City, South Carolina) was a Major League Baseball utility player. He is an alumnus of the University of South Carolina.

    Drafted by the St.

Plus, Cromer is out of options, and the Dodgers are fearful he'll be claimed off waivers, which is what happened with Jacob Brumfield Jacob Brumfield (born May 27, 1965 in Bogalusa, Louisiana), is a former professional baseball player who played outfield in the Major Leagues from 1992-1999. Seeing the ball: The longer it takes White to return from his strained hamstring, the more it should benefit backup outfielder Todd Hollandsworth Todd Mathew Hollandsworth (born April 20, 1973 in Dayton, Ohio) is an outfielder in Major League Baseball. Previously, Hollandsworth played with the Los Angeles Dodgers (1995-2000), Colorado Rockies (2000-2002), Texas Rangers (2002), Florida Marlins (2003), Chicago Cubs , who could use the work.

Since coming off the disabled list April 23, Hollandsworth is hitting .174 with a double and four RBI RBI

White left Sunday's game against the Marlins, which put Hollandsworth in center field for the three-game series with the Chicago Cubs, in which he didn't fair well. Hollandsworth was 1 for 9 against the Cubs with two walks and seven strikeouts. In 23 at-bats, Hollandsworth has 12 strikeouts.

``I have to try to get myself a good pitch and drive it,'' said Hollandsworth, who is expected to start again in center field tonight in St. Louis. ``I feel great at the plate. I'm fooled by the speed of pitches right now. (Monday), all I saw were change-ups. I had trouble recognizing what was a fastball and a change-up.''

Lineup talk: Dodgers manager Davey Johnson used the same lineup one through eight in the three games against the Cubs, but he said that might change even before White's return.

``I may have to tinker around,'' Johnson said. ``We'll see during the off day.''

The Dodgers averaged four runs in the three games against the Cubs. They had 25 hits but no more than nine hits in a game.

Darren James Dreifort (born May 3, 1972 in Wichita, Kansas) is a former Major League Baseball pitcher whose career was cut short by numerous injuries. He announced his retirement officially on February 23, 2006 after playing his entire professional career with the Los
on Wednesday, partly because the Cubs' lineup was set up for lefty Pedro Borbon. But Johnson said another reason was something he's noticed in Dreifort.

``In the fifth, sixth inning, around 80 pitches, his ball comes up a little bit,'' Johnson said.

Dreifort, who pitched 5-2/3 innings, allowed two runs. One came in the fifth inning and the other in the sixth.

It's also been the way Dreifort (4-2) has pitched this season. The first time through the batting order Noun 1. batting order - (baseball) a list of batters in the order in which they will bat; "the managers presented their cards to the umpire at home plate"

Off-day chatter: At the rate Dave Hansen is going, he might become the Dodgers' all-time pinch-hit leader by the end of the season. He's 7 for 12 this season and has 80 pinch hits for the Dodgers, 26 behind Manny Mota
