Thursday wasn't a very relaxing off day for Dodger shortstop Cesar Izturis, who woke up with a sore hamstring that kept him out of the lineup Friday night, then watched his lead in the All-Star Game An all-star game is an exhibition game played by the best players in their sports league. The players are often chosen by a popular vote of fans of the sport and the game often occurs at the halfway point of the regular season, although this is not the case for some all-star games  fan balloting disappear.

Izturis, who missed four games last month because of a strained right hamstring, had played in 11 consecutive games but only had five hits in 45 at-bats, part of a monthlong slide.

 revealed no structural damage to the hamstring, but Izturis had a cortisone cortisone (kôr`tĭsōn'), steroid hormone whose main physiological effect is on carbohydrate metabolism. It is synthesized from cholesterol in the outer layer, or cortex, of the adrenal gland under the stimulation of adrenocorticotropic  shot and almost certainly will miss tonight's game.

If Eckstein wins the fans' vote, it will be up to Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, the National League manager, to select the reserves. Because each team must have one representative, La Russa very well could bypass Izturis and select either San Francisco's Omar Vizquel or Cincinnati's Felipe Lopez.

--He's back: Odalis Perez removed any doubt about his readiness Thursday when he faced one batter over the minimum in five shutout innings in a rehabilitation start for Triple-A Las Vegas. Perez, out since May 15 with a sore shoulder, will return and start Tuesday against Colorado.

--Injury report: Milton Bradley (finger) took 10 swings from the left side and reported mild improvement.
