said no serious talks were ongoing regarding a possible Vizcaino trade, but sources said the Cardinals are ``intrigued'' with Vizcaino.

``We're looking at guys in the organization and we're also looking outside the organization,'' Jocketty said. ``We're more concerned with defense up the middle. We think we can generate enough offense between guys like J.D. Drew and Mark McGwire

``I've talked to a lot of GMs about a lot of things,'' Malone said. ``(The Cardinals) are looking to shore up their middle-infield position, but I talk with a couple of GMs a day. Everyone is trying to figure out where they're at and what they're doing.''

``He's a little stiff so he didn't throw his bullpen this time, and I don't want to send a guy out there who hasn't thrown a bullpen,'' pitching coach Charlie Hough

and Mlicki both said the stiffness came out of his last outing. He threw 4-2/3 innings against Cleveland on March 13, and didn't get a chance to warm up fully because starter Ismael Valdes
        • Ismael Valdés, co-founder of the Independent Liberal Party (Chile)
        • Ismael Valdéz (sic), Mexican baseballer
left the game with a tight thigh.

``I probably could pitch, but we might as well go a few more days and wait,'' Mlicki said. ``It's happened to me before. This is the fourth straight year it's happened, so it's no big deal.''

But it is certainly something other clubs will keep an eye on since Mlicki, the sixth starter in a five-man rotation, is considered to be on the trading block.

Avila retires: Ralph Avila, a staple of the Dodgers organization for the past 29 years, announced Thursday he was semi-retiring from his position of vice president of Campo Las Palmas in the Dominican Republic and as the Latin America scouting coordinator.

Major-leaguers Pedro Martinez, Ramon Martinez, Pedro Astacio, Jose Offerman, Raul Mondesi, Vizcaino and Wilton Guerrero each passed through Campo Las Palmas.

``I'm very proud of the players, but I'm more proud that the staff I recruited there, I'm pretty sure they are second to nobody,'' Avila said. ``I got an opportunity to work with Mike Piazza. When I got him he was a first baseman and converted him to a catcher.''

Avila, 68, will continue to serve as a special adviser to the president, a consulting position with the Dodgers.

Hundley watch: Manager Davey Johnson said he's hoping catcher Todd Hundley can catch after the Dodgers off day Tuesday. Hundley, trying to return from reconstructive right elbow surgery, hasn't caught a game this spring. He was supposed to catch last Sunday but experienced soreness in a muscle in his right elbow, something the Dodgers said is related to taking more than 30 minutes worth of batting practice.

However, Dodgers brass said not to worry, something club physician Dr. Frank Jobe reiterated.

``I think he could catch now, but I know they want to take it slowly,'' Jobe said. ``It's progressing, but slowly.''

This, that and the other: Today marks the one-year anniversary of Peter O'Malley's sale of the Dodgers to Rupert Murdoch and the Fox Group. . . . Hough said Jeff Shaw will make his spring debut today. . . . Pitcher Ricardo Jorda`n was reassigned to the minor-league camp after giving up two runs in one inning. . . . Outfielder Trenidad Hubbard, sidelined since a collision with Hiram Bocachica on March 8, said he's still three or four days away from returning to play. Originally, Hubbard was out with a thumb injury but said his left shoulder is bothering him now. . . . Jacob Brumfield, signed to a minor-league deal, has moved into the major-league clubhouse and is contesting Hubbard for the fifth outfielder's job. Brumfield is batting .353 with two homers in six games.

        DODGERS UPDATE

Thursday's recap: The Dodgers benefited from a strong wind, hitting four homers in a 9-3 blasting of a St. Louis Cardinals split squad that left Mark McGwire home. Adam Riggs had a grand slam for the Dodgers and Angel Pena, Jacob Brumfield and Tripp Cromer also homered. Ismael Valdes allowed one run in five innings.

Today's game: Another day, another trip to Port St. Lucie to play the Mets. The clubs meet for the fourth time this Grapefruit League season with left-hander Carlos Perez starting for the Dodgers. Perez has been roughed up in three spring outings, yielding 12 hits, eight runs and four homers in 10 innings.
