DODGERS NOTEBOOK: HOLLANDSWORTH GETS SHOT AT FIRST.

Byline: Brian Dohn Daily News Staff Writer

Dodgers manager Davey Johnson
David Allen Johnson (born January 30 1943) in Orlando, Florida is a former second baseman and manager in Major League Baseball. Johnson played for the Baltimore Orioles (1965-1972), Atlanta Braves (1973-1975), Philadelphia Phillies (1977-78) and Chicago Cubs (1978).
said he would find ways to get Todd Hollandsworth's bat into the lineup.

He did Saturday by playing the left-handed hitting outfielder in an unexpected place. Hollandsworth, who started five games in spring training at first base, started there in place of Eric Karros
Eric Peter Karros (born November 4, 1967 in Hackensack, New Jersey) is a former American baseball player who played in Major League Baseball from 1991-2004. Karros attended UCLA, where he receieved a degree in economics. Karros played his first MLB game on September 1, 1991.
      .

Both players accepted the move, but neither were tickled about it.

``I look at it as an opportunity to get in the lineup,'' Hollandsworth said before the Dodgers and St. Louis played Saturday. ``I'd like it more if I was in the outfield. I like roaming around out there. I've been waiting (to play) for a long time. I've been waiting for it all year. It's been a tough stretch.''

Playing in place of the injured Devon White
This article is about the baseball player. For the former soccer player, see Devon White (footballer).

in center field, Hollandsworth went 8 for 24 during a seven-game stretch last week, raising his average from .214 to .289. Johnson said he plans on rotating Hollandsworth into the outfield mix as well in order to rest some of the veterans.

``I have to keep 25 guys as fresh as I can keep them,'' Johnson said. ``(Hollandsworth) was swinging the bat well. I can't let him die over there. Karros isn't liking it. He's a horse.''

Indeed, Karros felt the brunt of this one. Two years ago he played in all 162 games. After an injury kept him out of the first 21 games last season, he played in 139 of the Dodgers' last 141 games.

This was the third time in 42 games this season he wasn't in the starting lineup For the line of action figures, see .

. ``Maybe if we had a stretch of 20 games in a row (without an off-day) I would (understand it).''

Of course, Johnson does have experience with veterans who want to play every day. He managed Cal Ripken Jr. in Baltimore.

``That was an adjustment for me because I could see when Cal could use a day off and I could put another guy in there,'' Johnson said. ``But there was the streak.''

Young late scratch: Johnson had to alter his original lineup because second baseman second baseman

``He's probably out (today) and hopefully he'll be all right for the road trip,'' Johnson said. ``He was on the trainer's table all day and he came out and tried to hit and it was too sore.''

Devon White was moved from sixth to first, Dave Hansen from eighth to sixth while Cromer hit eighth.

It's better than (after last September's surgery).'' Osuna is expected to miss two months. . . . Friday an error was given to Karros on a ball third baseman Adrian Beltre threw in the dirt. It was changed to an error by Beltre before Saturday's game, giving Beltre three errors in the game.

left-hander Carlos Perez (1-5, 6.63 ERA) to the mound to face Cardinals lefty Darren Oliver (3-2, 3.25). Perez has been an enigma. The Dodgers signed him to a three-year, $15 million contract after last season in which he went 4-4 with a 3.24 ERA in Los Angeles after being traded from Montreal. But Perez has been brutal this season, lasting 3-1/3 innings in his last start. Oliver is the only Cardinals regular starter to make a start in this series. He's second on the team in innings pitched (52-2/3) and hits allowed (50). Opponents are batting .258 against him.
