DODGERS NOTEBOOK: HITTERS RESCUE RELIEVER CLONTZ.

Byline: Matt McHale Daily News Staff Writer

Brad Clontz
John Bradley Clontz (born April 25, 1971 in Stuart, Virginia) was a relief pitcher in Major League Baseball who last played for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2000. He made his major-league debut on April 26, 1995.
had a good night and a bad night.

He allowed his first hit of the year on Thursday, a two-run homer by Kevin Young Kevin Young may mean any of several people:
    • Kevin Young (athlete) (born 1966), an American athlete
    • Kevin Young (baseball) (born 1969), an American baseballer
    • Kevin Young (footballer) (born 1961), an English footballer
in the seventh inning that gave the Pittsburgh a one-run lead. Then the Dodgers scored nine runs in the final two innings to defeat the Pirates 14-6 and Clontz became the winning pitcher.

``You always hope for those nights when your teammates pick you up,'' said Clontz, who had gone 11-2/3 innings without allowing a hit. ``We haven't been getting a lot of runs and it was great to see them come through.''

Clontz nearly was lifted for a pinch hitter pinch-hit

in the seventh, but when the Dodgers scored four runs in the inning, he remained in the game. He pitched a perfect eighth, then turned the game over to left-hander Scott Radinsky
Scott David Radinsky (born March 3 1968, in Glendale, California) is a left-handed former relief pitcher in Major League Baseball, who had an 11-year career from 1990-1993 and 1995-2001.

Radinsky finished his career with a 42-25 record, a 3.

``The pitch (to Young) was a bad slider A block of material that holds the read/write head of a magnetic disk. See flying head. ,'' Clontz said. ``I've been fortunate not to make too many bad pitches this year. I'm glad this one didn't hurt us too much.''

Leading off: Eric Young Eric Young can refer to:
      • Eric Young (baseball player)
      • Eric Young (footballer)
      • Eric Young (wrestler)
      • Eric Young (broadcaster)
      • Eric Young (American football), offensive guard at the University of Tennessee
opened the first game of the road trip with a base hit to center. He did the same to open the last trip. Young finished that trip 10 for 27. After going 2 for 5 with a walk, Young is batting .361 (17 for 47) in his past 14 games. He also scored four times and the Dodgers are 9-0 in games in which he had a least a run. Young stole three bases, giving him 11, three behind Houston's Craig Biggio

        .

Young also was involved in the strangest play of the game. In the Dodgers' five-run ninth, he popped a ball up along the first-base side that wasn't handled by pitcher Javier Martinez Javier Martinez (born February 5, 1977, in Bayamon, Puerto Rico) was a Major League Baseball pitcher.

Drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 3rd round of the 1994 MLB amateur draft, Martinez would make his Major League Baseball debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 2, 1998,
or first baseman Kevin Young. The ball dropped in, but Young collided with Kevin Young on his way to first. Both players fell to the ground and play was stopped for several minutes. Eric Young was awarded first base and Kevin Young was given an error.

``That play reminded me that I made the right decision when I gave up football,'' said Young, a wide receiver at Rutgers.

Hollandsworth slumping: Todd Hollandsworth, who appeared locked in at center field and the No. 2 spot in the order, was out of the starting lineup Thursday with Matt Luke in left and Roger Cedeno in center. He came off the bench and struck out twice and now is hitless in his past 13 at-bats.

``We're just playing different combinations and trying to go with the hot hand,'' manager Bill Russell said. ``We want Luke in there because of the left-hand power he has been showing. Tonight we went with Roger in center. Holly will get his chance.''

Zeile nailed: When the game started to get out of hand in the top of he ninth, cleanup hitter Todd Zeile was struck on the left shoulder by Martinez, the Pirates' fifth pitcher. Zeile took a few steps toward the mound before he was stopped by Pittsburgh catcher Jason Kendall. Martinez was upset that the Dodger roughed him up, but they also stole two bases with the lead. Zeile finished April with a .266 average (29 for 109), two home runs and 13 RBI RBI
