DODGERS NOTEBOOK: HERSHISER HAS ACCEPTED ROLE.

Byline: Steve Dilbeck Staff Writer

That's Orel Hershiser
Orel Leonard Hershiser IV (born September 16, 1958) was a former professional right-handed pitcher and is currently an analyst for Baseball Tonight on ESPN. In 1988, he won the Gold Glove, Cy Young Award, the NLCS MVP and the World Series MVP with the L.A. Dodgers.
, reliever. If it takes some getting used to, that's understandable.

Hershiser has been in the major leagues for 17 years, and nearly all of them as a starting pitcher Noun 1. starting pitcher - (baseball) a pitcher who starts in a baseball game

But at 41, he signed with the Dodgers to join the bullpen. And after three early-season starts, he now finds himself a full member of the bullpen for the first time since he earned a spot in the Dodgers rotation in 1984.

If it takes some adjusting, Hershiser downplays it.

``It's no different,'' Hershiser said. ``I just come to the ballpark. I'm just kind of hoping and waiting for an opportunity. That's my role now.

``I'm comfortable with it. I'm fine. It's what I prepared to do. I'm not taken back. Why does it have to be a big deal?''

Entering Friday's game against the Marlins, Hershiser had made only one appearance as a reliever - his first since 1989. His role in the bullpen, however, is undefined.

``We're trying to figure that out right now,'' said Dodgers manager Davey Johnson

--New Hispanic marketing firm: The Dodgers have gone outside in an attempt to improve their reach to the Hispanic community, announcing an agreement with Alternative and Innovative Marketing.

Earlier this year, the Dodgers hired Kris Rone Rone (1980) is a notable street artist living in Melbourne, Australia. His notability comes from the prolific nature of his art, the skill of his work and his unique and individual style.  to head their marketing department, renaming the position executive vice president. --Hundley hot: Catcher Todd Hundley
Todd Randolph Hundley (born May 27, 1969 in Martinsville, Virginia) is a former Major League Baseball catcher/outfielder.

Todd made his major league debut with the New York Mets on May 18, 1990 when he was only 20 years old.

Hundley, who was recovering from elbow surgery last year, returned to Dodger Stadium     [  on Friday 11 for 25 in his past seven games, with three home runs and six RBI RBI

``I'm healthy and everything feels good,'' Hundley said. ``Just trying to win some games.''

Hundley knew he would be watched closely this season, but he claims no special pleasure if his hot start has deflected criticism: ``I don't really give a (hoot) to tell you the truth.''

This article is about Gregg Olson, the pitcher; he is often confused with Greg Olson, the catcher.

``He's had a couple of decent side works, but he's not really where he was when we broke camp,'' Johnson said. ``I think I'd still like to see him a pitch couple of (minor-league) games to make sure he's OK.''

Johnson said it was undetermined when Olson might make a rehab appearance.

--Short hops: Team vice president Tommy Lasorda was interviewed by Bill Bavasi and Bob Watson last week for the U.S. Olympic manager's position. Lasorda is favored to get the nod, but an announcement is not expected until Monday at the earliest. . . . I just knocked somebody down. But I'm satisfied.''

Sanchez is off to a strong start himself (3-0, 4.81),and is 3-0 with a 4.43 ERA lifetime against the Dodgers. The Dodgers are 2-3 against left-handed starters this year.
