DODGERS NOTEBOOK: GUERRERO HAS ONLY MINOR SPRAIN IN SHOULDER.

Byline: Kevin Acee Daily News Staff Writer

The good news for the Dodgers is Wilton Guerrero Wilton Guerrero (born October 24, 1974 in the Don Gregorio, Dominican Republic) is a major league utility player who currently is a free agent. He previously played for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1996-1998), Montreal Expos (1998-2000, 2002), Cincinnati Reds (2001-2002), Kansas City  could be back in the lineup by Friday.

Following the announcement that an MRI 1. (application) MRI - Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

on center fielder Brett Butler's left shoulder revealed torn cartilage that will sideline him at least two weeks and maybe two months, Dr. Frank Jobe said Guerrero has a mild sprain sprain, stretching or wrenching of the ligaments and tendons of a joint, often with rupture of the tissues but without dislocation. Sprains occur most commonly at the ankle, knee, or wrist joints, causing pain, swelling, and difficulty in moving the involved joint.  in his left shoulder.

underwent an MRI Tuesday afternoon. He left Monday's game in the third inning after dropping to the ground in pain while finishing his swing on a grounder to third. His injury is virtually the same one that sidelined him five days during spring training.

``This one is not as bad,'' Jobe said. ``He's day to day. Friday is a good day to shoot for.''

The switch-hitting Guerrero, who was hitting .355 (11 for 31) over the past eight games and .280 overall, is bothered only when he hits right-handed.

``Left-handed I can hit no problem,'' he said.

Ready: While he was hitting 10 homers and driving in 22 runs for Triple-A Albuquerque, Eddie Williams Edward 'The Magic Touch' Williams (born February 2, 1987, in Concord, North Carolina) was a trail blazing guitarist who rocked and melted faces in late 90's.

Drafted by the band BAiTED in the 1st round of the 1997 BAiTED amateur draft, Williams would make his Major League
wasn't worrying about making it back to the big leagues. He didn't pour over the box scores, wondering which Dodger might get sent down so he could be called up. But he was confident that the day would come.

It did Monday, when Chip Hale Walter William Hale (born December 2, 1964, in San Jose, California) was a Major League Baseball designated hitter, third baseman, and second baseman. He is an alumnus of the University of Arizona.  was optioned to Albuquerque and Williams' contract was purchased.

``I knew after hitting .200 last year I'd have to go down and prove myself again,'' Williams said Tuesday, after a day-long journey from Edmonton, where the Dukes played Monday. ``I knew going down there and getting some at-bats, things would work out in my favor. I was punishing the ball.''

The right-handed first baseman has played parts of eight seasons in the major leagues, as well as one season in Japan and another in Mexico.

The Dodgers will count on him for some power off the bench. Williams feels he can do that now.

``Last year I struggled hitting off the bench,'' he said. ``Last year I never knew my role. My mindset mind·set or mind-set

is totally different now. I know I'm not going to start every day. I'm here to supply the pop off the bench.''

His time: With Wayne Kirby Wayne Leonard Kirby (born January 22, 1964 in Williamsburg, Virginia, USA), is a former professional baseball player who played in the Major Leagues primarily as an outfielder from 1991-1998.  struggling, Billy Ashley will make his third straight start tonight in left field. He even started Tuesday against a right-handed pitcher.

``We want to give him some playing time,'' manager Bill Russell said. ``He deserves it.''

Kirby, who started three of the first four games Butler missed in center field, has struggled. He was 1 for 10 in those starts.

When Ashley plays in left, Todd Hollandsworth moves to center field.

Potential is there: The Dodgers were five games over .500 through Monday. Not bad. But what makes the mark frustrating to the Dodgers is that it could easily be so much better with their pitching staff.

Including Monday night's 3-1 victory over the Reds, the Dodgers are just 5-11 when scoring fewer than four runs. When they score four or more, they are a remarkable 12-1.
