DODGERS NOTEBOOK: GRUDZIELANEK TRIES TO IRON THINGS OUT.

Byline: Brian Dohn Daily News Staff Writer

Dodgers shortstop Mark Grudzielanek Mark James Grudzielanek (born June 30, 1970 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) is a second baseman in Major League Baseball who currently plays for the Kansas City Royals. Previously, Grudzielanek played with the Montreal Expos (1995-1998), Los Angeles Dodgers (1998-2002), Chicago Cubs  arrived at Dodger Stadium     [  on Wednesday and found his name on a spot on the lineup card - among the extra position players available against the Chicago Cubs.

It was the third straight game, and eighth time in the last 20 games, Grudzielanek wasn't in the starting lineup For the line of action figures, see .
A starting lineup in sports refers to the set of players actively participating in the event when the game begins. The players in the starting lineup are commonly referred to as starters, whereas the others are substitutes
. Jose Vizcaino is instead the shortstop of choice.

A week ago, Grudzielanek would have panicked, but recently manager Davey Johnson
David Allen Johnson (born January 30 1943) in Orlando, Florida is a former second baseman and manager in Major League Baseball. Johnson played for the Baltimore Orioles (1965-1972), Atlanta Braves (1973-1975), Philadelphia Phillies (1977-78) and Chicago Cubs (1978).

``I'm getting way too much rest,'' Grudzielanek said. ``It's one of those things that it's a feeling-out process with me and (Johnson), and I'm trying to get an understanding of what he wants and I'm trying to learn a few things.

``It's definitely hard. I can't say I like the situation, but he's letting me know how things are and the way things are going to go.''

Johnson wants Grudzielanek to be more selective at the plate and hit more balls on the ground. The two spent much of Tuesday's batting practice session talking. That altered greatly from the first month of the season.

``I think I was more irritable or (angry) at him when he didn't talk to me,'' Grudzielanek said. ``The last few days he's been very talkative and explaining to me what he wants me to do. I'd be a nervous wreck nervous wreck n (col): to be a nervous wreck → estar de los nervios

nervous wreck n to be a nervous wreck → ĂȘtre une boule de nerfs

if he didn't say anything to me. It's the lazy fly balls and the pitches I shouldn't try to hit.''

But Grudzielanek, who's hitting .257, points to his All-Star season of 1996 when he hit .306 with Montreal. Most of that was done from the No. 2 spot.

``I felt like (Grudzielanek) was getting a few bad habits at the plate,'' Johnson said. ``Vizcaino has done a good job. When (Grudzielanek) starts doing what he is capable of doing, he'll be my shortstop. That's nothing against Jose (Vizcaino).''

``Right now, I would have to say no (to being ready Friday), but I might go visit the wizard tomorrow and then you never know,'' White said. ``It's just tightness.''

White injured his right leg Sunday against the Florida Marlins The Florida Marlins are a professional baseball team based in Miami Gardens, Florida. Today's day off will help him, but White said he's only at 70 percent and wouldn't even be ready to pinch hit.

``If I feel good, I might not even go that day,'' said White, who's jogging in the outfield and getting treatment. ``It's getting tired much quicker than it should.''

White's unavailability leaves the Dodgers with three healthy outfielders - Gary Sheffield, Todd Hollandsworth and Raul Mondesi.
