DODGERS NOTEBOOK: GONZALEZ MAKES IT ON BULLETIN BOARD.

Byline: Brian Dohn Staff Writer

DENVER - Many Dodgers players were confused and outraged by comments attributed to Arizona outfielder Luis Gonzalez Luis Gonzalez is a common personal name that can refer to different people:
  • Luis Emilio González (baseball outfielder): a Major League Baseball player for the Los Angeles Dodgers
in Tuesday's editions of USA Today USA Today

National U.S. daily general-interest newspaper, the first of its kind. Launched in 1982 by Allen Neuharth, head of the Gannett newspaper chain, it reached a circulation of one million within a year and surpassed two million in the 1990s.
, and they promised to use the words as motivation in their drive for the National League West title.

The Dodgers entered the day tied with San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  for the division lead, but Gonzalez said: ``We don't worry about the Dodgers. We never have.''

The Dodgers quickly made it bulletin-board material. Someone wrote the quote on a board in the visitors' clubhouse at Coors Field Coordinates:

and players vowed to make sure Gonzalez and the Diamondbacks don't forget the words.

``You see something like that, and the first thing I think of is just a lack of respect,'' Dodgers center fielder Dave Roberts For other uses, see Dave Roberts (disambiguation).

said. ``Since I've been here we've played them head-to-head and matched up very well against them. We got the best of them this year, and for him to say that, obviously, he has no respect and no regard for this baseball team. I think that adds more fuel to our fire.''

The Dodgers had won 10 in a row and were tied with the Giants for the division lead. Arizona was 6 1/2 games back.

Dodgers outfielder Brian Jordan
Brian O'Neal Jordan (born March 29 1967 in Baltimore, Maryland) is a former Major League Baseball outfielder and first baseman. After a brief NFL career, he played the first seven years of his baseball career with the St.
, an outspoken team leader, said Gonzalez was speaking the truth since the Dodgers haven't been to the playoffs since 1996 and either the Giants or the Diamondbacks won the division the past four years. But Jordan said Gonzalez's decision to make those feelings public was not wise.

``Hopefully, that's just going to add some fuel to our tank,'' Jordan said. ``That should be just a slap in our face right there. That's something that hopefully will drive us. I can't believe he said that. He's a veteran. He should know better than that.''

Gonzalez tried to clarify his comments before the Diamondbacks played the Giants. He told reporters he wasn't trying to slight the Dodgers and was answering a question about the current series against the Giants.

``We're not worried about them now,'' Gonzalez told the Arizona Republic. ``We're playing the Giants now, and then San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay. .''

Even so, the Dodgers won't forget the comments quickly.

``He's got a right to say whatever he feels like,'' Dodgers closer Eric Gagne said. ``We're doing pretty good right now. We're just going to have to prove him wrong, that's all.''

--Roberts' timetable: The Dodgers plan to activate Roberts, on the disabled list with a pulled right hamstring, on Sunday after he makes rehab appearances Thursday and Friday with Triple-A Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. Despite being on the disabled list since May 17, Roberts was second in the National League with 18 stolen bases.
