J.D. Drew was out of the lineup for a second consecutive day with right shoulder soreness, and the club was carrying only four outfielders. One of those, veteran center fielder Kenny Lofton Kenneth Lofton (born May 31, 1967 in East Chicago, Indiana) is a Major League Baseball outfielder. He bats and throws left-handed. He currently plays left field for the Cleveland Indians, with whom he has spent 10 seasons during three separate stints. , is playing with a sore left hamstring, and club officials want to give Lofton, who will turn 39 Wednesday, plenty of rest over the course of the season.

To make room for Kemp on the 25-man roster, the Dodgers optioned reliever Lance Carter to Las Vegas. To make room for Kemp on the 40-man roster, they moved shortstop Cesar Izturis from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list. Izturis has been on the DL since March 29, so he still is eligible to return anytime.

Colletti said Kemp, 21, got the call over Guzman and Young because he can play all three outfield positions. Both Guzman and Young are recently converted infielders.

--INJURY UPDATES: Drew said he will start today at Atlanta.

Second baseman Jeff Kent, who left Saturday's game with a sprained left wrist, also might return to the lineup.

``(Kent) has a little swelling, but ... it's less of a concern than it might be if it were in another area,'' Dodgers manager Grady Little said. ``It's ... a little bone bruise.''

Izturis got 10 at-bats in a loosely structured, extended spring training game Saturday and remains tentatively on track to begin his rehabilitation assignment at Las Vegas on Thursday.

Eric Gagne will make his second one-inning rehab appearance for the 51s today. He tentatively is slated to be activated Thursday.
