DODGERS NOTEBOOK: GARCIAPARRA HIT BY INJURY BUG.

Byline: VINCENT VINCENT Vital Information Necessary Centralized (movie, The Black Hole)  BONSIGNORE Staff Writer

The last thing the Dodgers need as they try to fend off the Padres this weekend is another injury.

But that's exactly what they're faced with after Nomar Garciaparra Anthony Nomar Garciaparra[1] (born July 23, 1973, in Whittier, California) is a Mexican-American baseball player who currently plays third base for the Los Angeles Dodgers.  left Friday's win with a strained left quadriceps muscle. The veteran first baseman left the game in the sixth inning after coming up lame while running out a groundball to first base.

Garciaparra received treatment on the injury all day Saturday, followed by some light running and batting practice before the Dodgers and San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  Padres resumed their crucial four-game series at Dodger Stadium     [ .

Nevertheless, he was held out of the lineup and his status is listed as day-to-day.

``We'll get some work in and take it from there,'' Garciaparra said. ``Hopefully, it won't be anything that lingers.''

Dodgers manager Grady Little William Grady Little (born March 30, 1950 in Abilene, Texas) is a manager in Major League Baseball. He guided the Boston Red Sox from 2002 to 2003, and has been manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers since 2006.  hopes to have Garciaparra back sooner rather that later, especially with the Dodgers and Padres separated by less than two games in the National League West.

But he isn't about to push Garciaparra back too early.

``I don't think it's anything too serious but he's got to be able to move around out there before he can play,'' Little said.

Jeff Kent to first base in place of Garciaparra, and started Julio Lugo at second base.

Little opted for a more veteran lineup against the Padres rather than using rookie James Loney at first base.

``That's the decision I made because I feel that's the best way we can go about getting a win today,'' Little said.

Big game: Dodgers pitcher Derek Lowe was walking around the clubhouse Saturday with a lucky hat, a lucky game jersey and the World Series championship ring he earned as a member of the 2004 Boston Red Sox The Boston Red Sox are a professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. The Red Sox are a member and currently champions of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball’s American League. From to the present, the Red Sox have played in Fenway Park. .

Obviously, Saturday's game was pretty big, as far as Lowe was concerned.

Not the Dodgers game -- although that was huge, too. Lowe was geeked about the Michigan-Notre Dame football game. He grew up in in Michigan and remains a big-time Wolverines fan. That was pretty evident by the blue-and-maize cap and jersey he was wearing and the way Lowe was bouncing around the clubhouse after the Wolverines trounced the Fighting Irish 47-21.

``I needed all the positive vibes I could get today,'' Lowe said, explaining the Michigan gear he was wearing. ``That was a big, big win. Now we've got to get Ohio State.''
