DODGERS NOTEBOOK: GAGNE LOSES BATTLE BUT NOT WAR.

Most rookies wouldn't get the chance to pitch the sixth inning. Not after the Dodgers rallied from two runs down to take a one-run lead in the bottom of the fifth.

        ``It was still a good outing,'' Johnson said. ``I liked what I saw. After (Edgardo) Alfonso's (first-inning homer), he (bore) down and didn't let it affect him. The way he handled it after two runs, he was clean to the sixth, and I think he was good in the sixth. . . . He didn't let the previous hitter affect him. He went right after him.''

        Gagne (0-1) allowed five runs on six hits in six innings. He walked three and struck out four.

        Dodgers right-hander Chan Ho Park (9-10, 5.68) facing Montreal righty Dan Smith (4-8, 5.59). The Expos are a hair above Triple-A, and Dodgers manager Davey Johnson said he'll use more of his call-ups now that the playoff-contending Mets have left town. Park has won three straight decisions for the first time this season, the middle victory coming against Chicago at home. It was his first win in 13 starts at Chavez Ravine. Smith is 2-2 with a 4.31 ERA in seven road games this season. Opponents are hitting .287 against him. Tuesday - Dodgers RH Kevin Brown (16-7, 3.03) vs. Expos RH Javier Vasquez (7-7, 5.41); Wednesday - Dodgers RH Darren Dreifort (13-13, 4.84) vs. Expos RH Jeremy Powell (2-6, 4.06).
