DODGERS NOTEBOOK: FOR STARTERS, IT'S BEEN SOLID.

Byline: Brian Dohn Daily News Staff Writer

Pitching was supposed to carry the Dodgers, and during this five-game winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins

the starters have done their jobs.

was the fifth consecutive solid start by a Dodgers pitcher - each by a different member of the rotation.

During the first five games of the nine-game road trip, the starters are 5-0 with a 3.24 ERA.

It began a few days after a team meeting in which Dodgers manager Davey Johnson
David Allen Johnson (born January 30 1943) in Orlando, Florida is a former second baseman and manager in Major League Baseball. Johnson played for the Baltimore Orioles (1965-1972), Atlanta Braves (1973-1975), Philadelphia Phillies (1977-78) and Chicago Cubs (1978).
told the pitchers to be more aggressive, especially with their fastballs, instead of trying to throw off-speed pitches on the corners of the plate.

Kevin Brown The name Kevin Brown can refer to several different people, including the following:
    • Kevin Brown (baseball) (b. 1965), a former Major League Baseball right-handed starting pitcher with 211 career wins
    • Kevin D. Brown (b.

pitched seven innings and allowed four runs in the series finale

    .

That trio is expected to lead the Dodgers, and is one of the best in baseball. But it's what the other two starters did that's allowed the momentum to continue.

Carlos Perez broke out of his slump with seven innings of one-run ball in the series opener against the Phillies before Dreifort's outing.

And it's eased the burden on the Dodgers' overworked bullpen.

``So far it's a good trip for the confidence,'' Dodgers pitching coach Charlie Hough
Charles Oliver (Charlie) Hough (rhymes with "tough" or "rough") (born January 5, 1948 in Honolulu, Hawaii) is a former knuckleball pitcher in Major League Baseball. Playing career

Defending their honor: In the spring, everyone outside of the Dodgers organization wondered how L.A. would survive defensively with Eric Young Eric Young can refer to:
      • Eric Young (baseball player)
      • Eric Young (footballer)
      • Eric Young (wrestler)
      • Eric Young (broadcaster)
      • Eric Young (American football), offensive guard at the University of Tennessee
and Mark Grudzielanek Mark James Grudzielanek (born June 30, 1970 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) is a second baseman in Major League Baseball who currently plays for the Kansas City Royals. Previously, Grudzielanek played with the Montreal Expos (1995-1998), Los Angeles Dodgers (1998-2002), Chicago Cubs  in the middle of the infield and Gary Sheffield

A month's sampling is in and the defense is fine. Young has two errors at second, Grudzielanek has made one at shortstop and Sheffield has played an error-free and splendid left field.

``They're all very athletic,'' Johnson said. ``Sheffield has been the Gold Glove left fielder. Threw a guy out at home, played the wall unbelievable at home. (Young and Grudzielanek) are taking extra ground balls. It wasn't something I was really worried about.''

The Osuna diary: Today's Antonio Osuna update has the right-hander experiencing tenderness in his elbow after throwing 2-2/3 innings at Single-A San Bernardino on Friday.

Johnson said Osuna will travel to Montreal on Monday and the Dodgers will examine him when they arrive for their three-game series. If Osuna is OK, Johnson said he'll be activated.

``He had a little bit of swelling after the game,'' Johnson said. ``He came in a little bit tender, the swelling went down, got a little treatment and went out and played catch.''

Osuna is trying to pitch through the pain of a bone spur Bone spur

If Osuna is activated, Johnson said the Dodgers will stay with 11 pitchers. It could mean left-hander Jeff Kubenka being returned to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Balks, walks and chalk: Catcher Paul LoDuca's seventh-inning single broke an 0-for-8 slump and raised his average from .036 to .069. Infielder Tripp Cromer followed with his first hit of the season after eight hitless at-bats. . . . Dodgers manager Davey Johnson has 999 career wins. . . . Dreifort stole his first base of the season in the second inning.

      TV/Radio: Channel 5; KXTA-AM (1150), KAVL-AM (610), KWKW-AM (1330, Spanish).

Matchup: It's marquee matchup No. 2 for Dodgers ace Kevin Brown. After facing Randy Johnson opening day, Brown meets Phillies right-hander Curt Schilling in the finale of a three-game series. Brown (2-1) hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in a start since yielding five in the opener. The right-hander is fourth in the league in ERA (2.34). He was 2-0 with a 1.96 ERA against Philadelphia last season. Schilling (3-1, 2.77) hasn't allowed a run in 10 innings and opponents are batting .206 against him. The Phillies scored 29 runs in Schilling's first three starts but scored three in his last two.
