DODGERS NOTEBOOK: DREIFORT MAKES PITCH TO STAY IN ROTATION.

Byline: Brian Dohn Staff Writer

While most of the Dodgers have little at stake over the next six weeks, Dodgers right-hander Darren Dreifort
Darren James Dreifort (born May 3, 1972 in Wichita, Kansas) is a former Major League Baseball pitcher whose career was cut short by numerous injuries. He announced his retirement officially on February 23, 2006 after playing his entire professional career with the Los
is pitching for his place in the rotation next season.

A few more outings like his seven-hit, 7-0 victory against the Florida Marlins The Florida Marlins are a professional baseball team based in Miami Gardens, Florida. The Marlins are a member of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball's National League. From to the present, the Marlins have played in Dolphin Stadium.  at Dodger Stadium     [  on Wednesday and discussions of whether Dreifort belongs in the bullpen or the rotation will be academic.

In one of his most controlled performances of the season, Dreifort (10-12) walked none and struck out four. It was the second shutout of his career. His other came last season against Arizona.

    Since Dodgers manager Davey Johnson
David Allen Johnson (born January 30 1943) in Orlando, Florida is a former second baseman and manager in Major League Baseball. Johnson played for the Baltimore Orioles (1965-1972), Atlanta Braves (1973-1975), Philadelphia Phillies (1977-78) and Chicago Cubs (1978).
said players would be playing for jobs regardless of their contract situation, Dreifort is on the plus side.

Though he allowed seven runs on 11 hits in six-plus innings in his last start, Dreifort is 2-2 with a 3.29 ERA in his last four starts, which also encompasses the time of Johnson's edict A decree or law of major import promulgated by a king, queen, or other sovereign of a government.

An edict can be distinguished from a public proclamation in that an edict puts a new statute into effect whereas a public proclamation is no more than a declaration of a law
      .

During that span is a 6-1/3-inning, one-earned-run gem against the Mets in which he struck out seven. But more important is Dreifort's control. After experiencing control problems most of his career, he has walked just five batters in his last 33-1/3 innings.

Looking toward September: Rosters expand from 25 to 40 on Sept. 1, and management has started to talk about possible call-ups. Manager Davey Johnson met with Dodgers assistant to the GM minor-league director Bill Geivett the past two days to discuss the issue.

``There's a dual purpose (for call-ups),'' Johnson said. ``You look and see if a guy should be on the 40-man in the winter, and look at what kind of role they may have on next year's club.''

The Dodgers don't have many options at the minor-league level, but Johnson said he expects to go heavy with middle infielders and pitchers.

Perhaps the most intriguing pitcher is Greg Gagne Greg Gagne may refer to:
      • Greg Gagne (wrestler) (born 1948; family name (IPA pronunciation: ['gɔnjə])
, who's 12-4 with a 2.71 ERA with Double-A San Antonio San Antonio (săn ăntō`nēō, əntōn`), city (1990 pop. 935,933), seat of Bexar co., S central Tex., at the source of the San Antonio River; inc. 1837. . Gagne is the only player below Triple-A Albuquerque expected to get a late-season look.

Jeff Williams (born June 6, 1972 in Canberra) is an Australian-born, left-handed pitcher for the Hanshin Tigers baseball team.
(9-5, 4.66 ERA), Matt Herges Matthew Tyler Herges (born April 1, 1970, in Champaign, Illinois) is a Major League Baseball pitcher. He is an alumnus of Illinois State University.

Signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 1992, Herges would make his Major League Baseball debut with
(8-3, 4.73) and Ricky Stone (5-8, 5.41) and infielders Adam Riggs (.286), Alex Cora (.329) and Juan Castro (.283) are all probables. Also, the Dodgers are expected to bring catcher Angel Pena back once rosters expand.

Johnson added that lefty Carlos Perez, who's in the first year of a three-year, $15.5 million contract and is the minors' highest-paid pitcher isn't likely to make it back to the Dodgers before Sept. 1. Perez, who pitches today, is 1-2 with a 7.94 ERA with Albuquerque.

``Right now, Carlos, it looks like he needs a couple more starts,'' Johnson said. ``Carlos may be a September call-up.''

Dugout club seats: The Dodgers announced their plans for the Dugout Club seating that will close the distance between the catcher and backstop by 25 feet. It's part of the continuing renovations at Dodger Stadium.

The Dugout Club Lounge will have a bar, restaurant and bar-style seating, a buffet area and 23 television monitors, and seat 565 fans. The first row is 58 feet from home plate. Tickets for the first two rows will be $225. The remaining 485 seats will be $195. It's expected to be ready for the 2000 season.

Extra bases: Right-hander Robinson Checo will pitch in a rehab assignment for Class-A San Bernardino today. Righty right·y   Informal
