DODGERS NOTEBOOK: DODGERS SAY NO TO DAAL'S TRADE DEMAND.

Byline: Brian Dohn Staff Writer

JUPITER, Fla. - Dodgers general manager Dan Evans told Omar Daal's agent Wednesday that he would not honor the left-hander's trade demand because Daal is too valuable as a long reliever Long relievers are a type of relief pitcher in baseball. Long relievers traditionally enter early in a game (anywhere from the first inning to the fourth inning) when the starting pitcher cannot continue, whether due to ineffective pitching, lack of endurance, rain delays, injury,  and emergency starter.

However, Daal's agent, Peter Greenberg, said Daal would continue to pursue a trade until one is made. He added that Daal's request for a trade stemmed not only from being sent to the bullpen, but because he was slighted by the Dodgers.

``I don't think it's dead,'' Greenberg said. ``I made a point to Dan that Omar had other things he considered. It's not just the fact he's going to the bullpen. He doesn't think he was respected. He doesn't feel comfortable. He feels like he needs to be traded for other reasons. Omar didn't think it was right that he wasn't penciled into the rotation and had to fight for a spot.''

Daal, who was 2-2 with a 5.96 ERA this spring, lost the fifth spot in the rotation to left-hander Odalis Perez, who was 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA.

``Omar felt they made a decision before camp started and he didn't have a chance,'' said Greenberg, who viewed Daal's six shutout innings Tuesday against the New York Mets

Greenberg said another reason Daal wants a trade is because he's a free agent after the season and doesn't want to get labeled as a 30-year-old who no longer can start.

However, Evans wants either a starting pitcher Noun 1. starting pitcher - (baseball) a pitcher who starts in a baseball game

or an established closer or setup man in the deal for Daal, and added he wasn't eager to make a move because the Dodgers lacked starting-pitching depth in the minor leagues.

``I have to do what's in the best interest of the Dodgers and not what's always in the best interest of the player,'' Evans said. ``There would have to be a starting pitcher involved (in any trade). Without starting pitchers coming up from our minor leagues right now, it's important for us to protect starting pitching.''

The Dodgers' starting rotation that left spring training last season made only 96 starts. Andy Ashby

Tracy said he wanted to ease Karros, traditionally a middle-of-the-lineup batter, back into the mix and not put too much pressure on him early in the season.

A blow to Karros' pride, perhaps?

``Pride went right out the window last year,'' Karros said jokingly. ``To be honest, that's not the issue. If I was the manager, I'd have the lineup he had out there today.''

That lineup had Dave Roberts For other uses, see Dave Roberts (disambiguation).

--Happy Herges: Right-hander Matt Herges, traded from the Dodgers to Montreal on Saturday, said he is over being dealt for the first time in his career thanks to some news that brightened his world.

``I think I'm over the shock,'' Herges said. ``It took Jane (his wife) and I being pregnant to get over it. That did it.''

Herges, one of the most popular Dodgers the past two seasons, found out after a game recently when his wife called him over to the stands and handed him a gift.

``It was a baby shirt,'' Herges said. ``I lost it. I was bawlin' and hugging her. I felt like an idiot because I was bawlin' on the field. It put things in perspective for me. The whole world is caving in on you. You got to a new team, a new country, and then this happened.''

Herges didn't pitch against the Dodgers, and was thankful for that. He's saving his energy and motivation for when Montreal comes to Los Angeles for four games May 16-19.

``I'm gearing up for the middle of May,'' said Herges, who will begin the season in a closer-by-committee capacity. ``That's what I'm going to look forward to.''

--Orosco's fate: Left-hander Jesse Orosco remains off the 40-man roster, but it's only a formality that the club picks up the $800,000 major-league portion of the contract. Manager Jim Tracy praised Orosco for his wonderful spring, in which he pitched 11 scoreless innings and allowed four hits.

``For me, it's not an issue,'' Tracy said of picking up Orosco's contract. ``We need Jesse Orosco. You can't argue that. His fastball is better. His breaking ball is sharper.''

--Payroll deductions: Evans continues to entertain trade options for center fielder Tom Goodwin and pitcher Mike Trombley as he tries to trim their $6 million of guaranteed money from payroll. If Evans could at least rid the Dodgers of half that obligation, the team's payroll would fall below $100 million on opening day, a $15 million decrease since the end of last season.

With Hiram Bocachica expected to win the last outfielder's spot over Mike Kinkade, and Orosco's contract being picked up, the Dodgers' payroll currently sits at $101.8 million. That includes guaranteed money to Trombley and Goodwin, who were told they would not make the club.
