DODGERS NOTEBOOK: DODGERS LOOK FOR PROSPECTS.

Byline: Brian Dohn Daily News Staff Writer

The Seattle Mariners The Seattle Mariners are a professional baseball team based in Seattle, Washington. The Mariners are a member of the Western Division of Major League Baseball's American League.  said his club was ``compatible'' with the Mariners when it came to making a trade, adding that was also true for seven or eight other clubs.

``We're compatible with any club that has prospects,'' Malone said.

But Seattle could be falling off the list. Mariners general manager Woody Woodward William Frederick "Woody" Woodward (born September 23, 1942, in Miami, Florida) is a retired player and general manager in Major League Baseball. He played for the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves (1963-1968) and the Cincinnati Reds (1968-1971) and was later the general manager of the New  has told several people he isn't willing to part with pitching prospects such as Ryan Anderson Ryan Anderson may refer to:

or Freddy Garcia. At least not yet.

``I don't see any advantage to being in a hurry,'' Malone said. ``I'm going to wait as late as I can. I'd rather have too much of something than not enough.''

But the question is what type of prospects other clubs are willing to relinquish. Obviously the Dodgers won't be trading Kevin Brown The name Kevin Brown can refer to several different people, including the following:

or Chan Ho Park. It's doubtful they're ready to give up on Darren Dreifort and Carlos Perez, the lone lefty among the starters, unless a blockbuster deal comes their way.

That leaves Ismael Valdes and Dave Mlicki, with Mlicki listed as the probable because of Valdes' age (25).

But with six starters, and other teams in dire need of starting pitchers, the Dodgers are in position to hold onto one of the starters late into spring training, which should inflate the trade value. And Malone is playing right along.

``If we trade a guy now and someone gets hurts, then I'm out there looking for Looking for

another pitcher when I could have already had one,'' Malone said. ``I have no problem waiting.''

Tripp to L.A.? Dodgers utility infielder Tripp Cromer is out of options, which means he would have to clear waivers to be sent to the minor leagues. That may not be an issue.

``He's going to be on my ballclub. He'll fit,'' Dodgers manager Davey Johnson said. ``A right-handed bat in the infield. You can double switch. (Cromer) can play all three (infield positions). Barring a trade. . . he'll be with us.''

Johnson said he wants to carry three backup infielders, and Cromer's versatility is something Johnson likes.

Bullpen chatter: Right-hander Doug Bochtler and lefty Pedro Borbon both pitched an inning of scoreless relief, notable since the Dodgers are trying to iron out their bullpen situation.

While Borbon continues to build arm strength after his 1996 ``Tommy John'' surgery, the Dodgers are trying to get Bochtler back to his 1995-97 San Diego Padres' form, when he had a 3.78 ERA in 151 appearances - instead of the 0-2, 6.15 ERA he suffered through last season with Detroit.

After giving up four runs in two innings in his first spring appearance, Bochtler worked with pitching coach Charlie Hough on his mechanics.

``I was pulling my head away from home plate, causing problems with my release point,'' Bochtler said after his second straight scoreless outing. ``We worked on a lot of stuff. The coaching staff, I feel, is really giving me a chance and working with me.''
