DODGERS NOTEBOOK: DODGERS ACTIVATE RELIEVER DREIFORT.

Byline: Eric Noland Daily News Staff Writer

The undisputed strength of the Dodgers' roster just muscled up even more.

The club activated right-handed reliever Darren Dreifort
Darren James Dreifort (born May 3, 1972 in Wichita, Kansas) is a former Major League Baseball pitcher whose career was cut short by numerous injuries. He announced his retirement officially on February 23, 2006 after playing his entire professional career with the Los

That gives the pitching-rich Dodgers 12 arms (seven in the bullpen) - an usually high number for a club whose starting staff is not known for being knocked out of games early.

``We've got 20 games with no days off. That's why we wanted to do it,'' said manager Bill Russell, whose team won't have a breather until July 7. ``Anything can happen in those 20 games.''

Besides, it's not as if the Dodgers picked clean a productive bench. Fonville, who was optioned to Albuquerque, batted .143 with one RBI RBI

Anthony was designated for assignment Designated for assignment is a contractual term used in Major League Baseball. Ready to go: The Dodgers said there will be no restrictions on the use of Dreifort, who was out 34 days with tendinitis in his right elbow, but they are likely to tread lightly with him, given the fact the pitcher is on the way back from a major reconstruction of that elbow.

Would Dreifort be better served by a starting job in the future?

``I think that's easier on everybody's arm,'' he said. ``You're on a regular schedule. You're not up and down every night or every other night.''

Packing more punch: Through Monday's interleague games, the American League held a 30-27 advantage over the National League in wins and a 58-53 edge in home runs.

Dodgers pitcher Tom Candiotti, who has worked in both leagues, says he isn't the least bit surprised.

``It's definitely an offensive league over there,'' he said. ``A team like Seattle, you put them in their park and every guy in the lineup has a chance to hit a home run. There is not as much bunting, not as much hit-and-running (in the American League).

``But I would like to see longer series between teams. Two games is not enough to adjust to a park.

``I think we need a few more games to see how it comes out.''
