DODGERS NOTEBOOK: CROMER'S RETURN WILL MEAN BASES OVERLOADED.

Byline: Brian Dohn Daily News Staff Writer

Tripp Cromer Roy Bunyan Cromer III (born November 21, 1967, in Lake City, South Carolina) was a Major League Baseball utility player. He is an alumnus of the University of South Carolina.

Drafted by the St.
, on the disabled list with an irregular heartbeat since July 6, will begin a rehab stint for Triple-A Albuquerque.

The length of the rehab depends on how Cromer plays, how the Dodgers play, and the Dodgers infielders with whom teams are interested. One thing is certain, there's not enough room for all the Dodgers infielders.

The only infielder with options remaining is Adrian Beltre, and he's not going anywhere. Mark Grudzielanek Mark James Grudzielanek (born June 30, 1970 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) is a second baseman in Major League Baseball who currently plays for the Kansas City Royals. Previously, Grudzielanek played with the Montreal Expos (1995-1998), Los Angeles Dodgers (1998-2002), Chicago Cubs , an obvious trade candidate, is playing well. He has also played for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Florida Marlins, and Los Angeles Dodgers. . Young, who's drawn interest from other teams in need of speed, is the Dodgers' only leadoff hitter. Counsell, recently acquired in a trade, is a valuable defensive specialist who possesses moxie (language, music) Moxie - A language for real-time computer music synthesis, written in XPL.

and an attitude of playing baseball the right way. He's also a lefty bat off the bench.

``Let's not say at this time we're actually looking to make changes,'' Malone said. ``I'm not looking to make any trades for the sake of making trades. We're playing well right now. This teams seems to be more focused.''

The Dodgers beat the Pirates 12-7 Monday for their seventh win in nine games, and they're playing their best baseball since the first week of the season.

``I like Tripp. I like him as a player,'' Malone said. ``They all have different things they can do. You have everything pretty much all covered.''

Malone acknowledged that at some point a move would have to be made. But they have a 20-day window, perhaps more, with Cromer. A rehab stint can last 20 days, longer if the club petitions for more time.

Who's to start? Before the game, Dodgers manager Davey Johnson said that either lefty Onan Masaoka or right-hander Jamie Arnold would start one of the doubleheader games Thursday against Colorado depending on whether either pitched Monday against the Pirates.

Well, Masaoka relieved Dreifort in the seventh inning. Then Arnold relieved Masaoka in the eighth inning.

However, Johnson said he was leaning toward Arnold starting Thursday's second game. Arnold's only other major league start came May 5 when he allowed one hit in 6-2/3 innings in Montreal.

No negotiating for you: Reliever Antonio Osuna's agent, Albert Rosario, called Malone and wanted to negotiate a contract for the ailing Osuna since the Dodgers aren't going to pick up his option next season. But talks will have to wait until after the season.

``It's an inappropriate time,'' Malone said. ``We'll discuss that at the end of the season.''

Osuna, who's had bone spurs removed on his right elbow twice in the past 10 months, is deciding if he'll have the Tommy John surgery Tommy John surgery, known by doctors as ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction (or UCL), is a surgical procedure in which a ligament in the medial elbow is replaced with a tendon from elsewhere in the body (often from the forearm, hamstring, knee, or foot of the  on a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament Ulnar collateral ligament can refer to:

: Second baseman Young sat out with a sore right hamstring. Counsell went 2 for 5 in his place, but Young's injury isn't considered series. ``(Young) feels pretty good,'' Johnson said. ``He wanted to play. My feeling is with leg injuries . . . I don't want to run him out there. He's feeling it, so if it's sore, nine innings here (on turf) is the worst thing for him.'' . . . Todd Hundley's third-inning grand slam was the second by the Dodgers this season. Devon White hit one against the Angels on June 6. . . . Eric Karros' homer in the fourth was his 20th. He's the seventh Dodger to hit at least 20 homers in five consecutive years. Raul Mondesi was the sixth to accomplish the feat when he homered Saturday in Anaheim. . . . Karros and Todd Hollandsworth hit back-to-back homers, the third time the Dodgers have done it this season.
