Although Dodgers general manager Kevin Malone

Kevin Malone is a fictional character from the US television series, The Office. He is played by Brian Baumgartner.

David Allen Johnson (born January 30 1943) in Orlando, Florida is a former second baseman and manager in Major League Baseball. Johnson played for the Baltimore Orioles (1965-1972), Atlanta Braves (1973-1975), Philadelphia Phillies (1977-78) and Chicago Cubs (1978).
have spoken periodically about the future of the coaching staff, they won't decide the fate of the coaches until the season concludes.

``During the season, I don't think it's the time,'' Malone said. ``We have to finish up 1999. For 2000, I'll meet after the season with Davey and then meet with the new president or (Fox Sports Enterprises president) Rick Welts and tell them the direction we want to go.''

Originally, Malone and Johnson were going to meet during the road trip, but decided not to, partly because of the firing of Dodgers president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  Bob Graziano Bob Graziano is a former president of the Los Angeles Dodgers of American Major League Baseball. He is currently Managing Director for the Western Region of Northern Trust, an investment management company. .

First-base coach John Shelby John T. Shelby (born February 23, 1958, in Lexington, Kentucky) was a Major League Baseball player from 1981-1991.

Over his 11 year career he played with three different teams: the Baltimore Orioles (1981-1987), Los Angeles Dodgers (1987-1990), and Detroit Tigers (1990-1991).
and third-base coach Glenn Hoffman Glenn Edward Hoffman (born July 7 1958 in Orange, California) is a former shortstop in Major League Baseball and the current third base coach for the San Diego Padres. Previously, in 1998 he took over the managerial position for the Los Angeles Dodgers final half of the season when  joined the Dodgers staff last season. Hoffman replaced the fired Bill Russell Noun 1. Bill Russell - United States basketball center (born in 1934)

Bench coach Jim Tracy, batting coach Rick Down and bullpen coach Rick Dempsey are in their first full season with the organization. Pitching coach Claude Osteen joined the staff when Charlie Hough was fired May 26.

The front-office brain trust met with the coaches and Johnson for seven hours Wednesday to evaluate the Dodgers' roster and players in the National League. They'll meet again today in Houston to discuss American League players before Malone heads back to Los Angeles.

, which ended his season Sept. 15 against Montreal, has brought back the debate of whether the right-hander is better suited to start or relieve. It's a topic the Dodgers will discuss during the offseason and address in the spring.

Two months ago, Johnson said Dreifort needed to prove his worth. A few weeks ago, Johnson said Dreifort proved it, but then the former first-round pick was beset by tightness in his shoulder.

The crux of the issue is durability. Dreifort's two seasons as a starter ended with arm weariness. He threw a career-high 180 innings last season, but didn't throw after Sept. 4 because of soreness in his pitching shoulder. This year, he was shut down after 178-2/3 innings. He was 13-13 with a 4.79 ERA.

``Nothing real serious has been discussed yet,'' Malone said. ``It's always been considered an option. He's pitched well. He was a closer in college. He's still developing as a starter. You don't just pitch 250 innings. You build up to that. The more innings you get, the more experience you have.''

He also had a hit and is batting .299 with 33 homers and 100 runs scored. If he drives in two more runs and maintains his average, he'll join Snider as the only Dodgers to bat .300, hit 30 homers and reach the century mark in RBI, runs scored and walks.

Matchup: The Dodgers, mercifully, open their final series of a miserable season with a shot at impacting the playoff race. The Astros are fighting with Cincinnati for the NL Central title and also with the Mets for the wild-card spot. The Dodgers open the series with rookie right-hander Eric Gagne (0-1, 2.63 ERA) opposing Houston right-hander Shane Reynolds (16-13, 3.73). It'll be Gagne's final start in a terrific season in which he was named Texas League pitcher of the year and the organization's pitcher of the year. He was 12-4 with a 2.63 ERA with Double-A San Antonio, and in 24 innings with the Dodgers, Gagne's struck out 25.
