Roger Cedeno, a free agent this past offseason, was hoping to return to the team where he started his career. ``If they called me, I would have gone over there,'' Cedeno said. ``I would have played over there. Because of a bloated payroll situation and an inflexible roster, the Dodgers never got involved in the Cedeno bidding. He chose a four-year, $19 million deal from the Mets, who revamped their lineup. Meanwhile, the Dodgers leadoff situation, and center-field role, remains a conundrum. That might not have been the case if Cedeno was not traded to the Mets in a three-team deal after the '98 season. In the three seasons since the trade, Cedeno has hit .298 and averaged 49 steals and a .373 on-base percentage. Dodgers leadoff hitters had a .306 on-base percentage and 37 stolen bases last season. ``The Dodgers knew I had speed, but they never gave me the green light,'' Cedeno said. ``When I came (to the Mets), they gave me the green light right away. They told me that they just wanted me to go. 'If you get thrown out, you get thrown out. It's a big-league catcher behind home plate. If you get thrown out, you get thrown out. Go. Go fast.' ``You get confidence. When the manager tells you you've got a green light, that really helps. You don't want to go to first base and wait for a sign if you got speed. That makes it harder. That makes it tough. If your manager doesn't think you can steal, I'm not going to go anywhere. Bad things happen for good reasons.'' Cedeno, 27, started his career with the Dodgers, as a nondrafted free agent in 1991. He made his debut in '95. Cedeno said he was tense playing for the Dodgers. He was afraid a mistake would lead to a benching and it often did. In parts of four seasons, Cedeno played 311 games, batting .252 with a .329 on-base percentage. ``It's hard to play like that,'' Cedeno said. ``I think when you first come up, you need some confidence. Sometimes it doesn't matter how good you do, they don't put you in games. Or if you make an error, or a mistake, they didn't put you back (in). Everybody makes mistakes. Everybody does bad things. The only things you can do to make up for the error is play and prove you can do it. ``Some young guys, you got to let them play. Some people take a long time. They let me play a little bit, maybe not long enough, but a little bit. They had all the big guys, they had Sheffield and guys like that. Every time I looked up there in center field, I said that's why I'm here on the bench. I just look at it that way.
