Byline: Matt McHale Staff Writer

Is Matt Herges Matthew Tyler Herges (born April 1, 1970, in Champaign, Illinois) is a Major League Baseball pitcher. He is an alumnus of Illinois State University.

Signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 1992, Herges would make his Major League Baseball debut with

Herges, tied with Minnesota's Bob Wells for the major-league lead with eight relief victories, also got a pitch up to Jeff Cirillo, who doubled to open the ninth. After Todd Helton was intentionally walked, catcher Paul Lo Duca Paul Anthony Lo Duca (born April 12, 1972 in Brooklyn, New York) is a catcher in Major League Baseball who plays for the New York Mets. Previously, Lo Duca played for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1998-2004) and Florida Marlins (2004-2005).  tried to pick Cirillo off second, but the throw sailed into center field. Cirillo took third and eventually scored on an opposite-field single by Alex Ochoa.

The run raised Herges ERA to 3.57. On June 20 it was 2.72.

``(Herges) seemed fine,'' Lo Duca said. ``He did his job.''

--More Relief: Dodgers manager Jim Tracy said Shaw was available Sunday, even though it would have marked his fourth consecutive day of work. Shaw, who leads the NL with 32 saves, including a major-league high 11 in July, never got up.

On July 17 at Pittsburgh, Tracy did not use Shaw for a fourth consecutive day even though the Dodgers had a 4-1 lead and a save situation. Herges pitched the ninth and earned the save.

Saturday, Shaw needed just five pitches to record the final out. Tracy said that made him available Sunday.

``There were a couple of differences in the two games,'' Shaw said. ``Pitch count means a lot more than the number of appearances.''

--Quick Hits: Gary Sheffield, who tied the game in the sixth with a home run, went 2 for 3 and is batting .478 (11 for 23) in his last six games.
