DODGERS NOTEBOOK: BROWN IS SOLID IN DODGERS DEBUT.

Byline: Brian Dohn Daily News Staff Writer

Kevin Brown The name Kevin Brown can refer to several different people, including the following:
  • Kevin Brown (baseball) (b. 1965), a former Major League Baseball right-handed starting pitcher with 211 career wins
  • Kevin D. Brown (b.
was neither sensational nor sloppy, but he was satisfied, which is the most important thing when it comes to the first spring-training start.

``As long as you feel healthy, that's the main thing,'' the Dodgers right-hander said. ``I would have liked to have been a little sharper. The arm strength is pretty good, but the timing is a little off.''

True to his reputation as a guy who will constantly push himself, Brown didn't settle for the traditional two innings of work that usually accompanies a pitcher's spring debut. He also pitched the third Sunday against the Mets. He threw 45 pitches in all, allowing two hits, including a first-inning homer to Edgardo Alfonzo Edgardo Antonio Alfonzo (born November 8, 1973 in Miranda State, Venezuela) is an Atlantic League of Professional Baseball infielder in the Long Island Ducks and a former player in Major League Baseball, most notably for the New York Mets. .

``He hit his spots but left one ball out,'' Dodgers manager Davey Johnson
David Allen Johnson (born January 30 1943) in Orlando, Florida is a former second baseman and manager in Major League Baseball. Johnson played for the Baltimore Orioles (1965-1972), Atlanta Braves (1973-1975), Philadelphia Phillies (1977-78) and Chicago Cubs (1978).
said. ``I think he felt satisfied.''

The next step for Brown is throwing more curveballs and re-establishing his pinpoint accuracy.

``The more you get into it the more you work on the breaking ball,'' Brown said. ``I haven't thrown many yet.''

Classic moment I: Catcher Todd Hundley
Todd Randolph Hundley (born May 27, 1969 in Martinsville, Virginia) is a former Major League Baseball catcher/outfielder.

Todd made his major league debut with the New York Mets on May 18, 1990 when he was only 20 years old.
and his reconstructed right elbow appeared in his first spring game - or quasi-game since it was a five-inning ``B'' squad affair - and went 0 for 3 with a walk as the designated hitter designated hitter

. But the most surreal scene took place after he broke his bat in his first plate appearance. He headed back to the clubhouse, accompanied by a team physician and doctor, and followed by a horde of media. Hundley went to his locker, pulled out a bat and walked back through the clubhouse.

``What? Didn't you see the last at-bat?'' Hundley said with a laugh. ``I need a new bat.''

Pedro's push: It's one outing, but with the Dodgers in need of finding a stabilizing lefty in the bullpen, Pedro Borbon's 11-pitch eighth inning was enough to gain attention.

``For the first time out, he was relatively sharp,'' Dodgers pitching coach Charlie Hough
Charles Oliver (Charlie) Hough (rhymes with "tough" or "rough") (born January 5, 1948 in Honolulu, Hawaii) is a former knuckleball pitcher in Major League Baseball. Playing career
said. ``That's a nice little step right there.''

On the mend from elbow surgery that's kept him out of the majors the past two seasons, Borbon said it was the best he's thrown since 1996.

``This was a real big step for me,'' Borbon said. ``Last year my first outing (in spring training) I hurt myself. I came out of this with a good feeling about my arm.''

Beltre banter: Third baseman third baseman

Noun 1. third baseman - (baseball) the person who plays third base

Adrian Beltre is being touted not only for his bat but also his glove, and it took him eight batters to impress pitcher Kevin Brown with his fielding. The Mets' Rey Ordonez hit a slow roller down the third-base line, which Beltre barehanded bare·hand·ed

and threw to first for the out.

``Unbelievable. He sold me,'' Brown said. ``I was going to make the play. When he called me off, I didn't think he had a chance. It was a great play, and not on a slow guy, either.''

Shaw back Friday: The saga is over. Julie Shaw, the wife of Dodgers closer Jeff Shaw

Jeffrey Lee Shaw (born July 7 1966 in Washington Court House, Ohio) is a former Major League Baseball relief pitcher who had a 12-year career from 1990 to 2001.
, gave birth to the couple's third child Saturday evening, six hours after Shaw left Vero Beach to return to his Washington Court House, Ohio

, home. Griffin Lee Shaw weighed 10 pounds, 10 ounces.

Dodgers officials said Shaw is expected to return to Dodgertown on Friday.

Catching on: The bat isn't the concern. What Gary Sheffield wants to prove to everyone, including himself, is that playing left field will create no dramas. It's why Sheffield was anxious in making his first appearance of the spring. Though he went 0 for 1, he also made plays without incident in the field.

``You want to get a couple out of the way, especially against the left-handed hitters with the ball slicing away,'' Sheffield said.

        DODGERS UPDATE

Sunday's recap: The Dodgers' Mel Rojas yielded a ninth-inning solo homer to Mike Kinkade as the Mets and Dodgers played to a 2-2 tie in nine innings. Kevin Brown pitched three innings, allowing a solo homer to Edgardo Alfonzo. Adrian Beltre had two hits and two RBI RBI

Today's game: The Dodgers make the two-hour trek south to visit general manager Kevin Malone's old club, the Baltimore Orioles, in Fort Lauderdale at 10:05 a.m. Right-hander Chan Ho Park makes his spring training debut and will be followed by Eric Gagne and Ricky Stone. Catcher Todd Hundley is expected to make the trip and DH.
