DODGERS NOTEBOOK: BONILLA SEASON IN DOUBT.Byline: Matt McHale Daily News Staff Writer Bobby Bonilla Bonilla is upset that the Dodgers keep asking about the condition of his surgically repaired left wrist that put him on the DL July 17. ``Ideally, they would let me go home, set up a rehab place and let me get better,'' Bonilla said. ``That would be best for both parties. That's not what I want to do, but what can I do?'' Bonilla, 35, will have the wrist examined Friday in New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of by Dr. Charles Malone, who repaired ligament damage in the wrist last December. Bonilla took batting practice Wednesday but cut it short after complaining of pain above the wrist. ``They knew this was going to be a problem when they traded for me,'' Bonilla said. ``Recovery time is one year. Believe me, I want to be out there, but I can't. Maybe the doctor will say give it one more try. But I'm not going to be the bad guy in here.'' All this was news to general manager Tom Lasorda, who said he was surprised by the comments, since Bonilla appeared to be making progress. ``He looked great out there,'' Lasorda said. ``How are we supposed to know how he is doing unless we ask him? We thought he was getting better. He was great in BP. He didn't tell us anything was wrong.'' Bonilla also is hobbled by a tender left Achilles' tendon Achilles' tendon (tendo calcaneus) (tĕn`dō kălkā`nēəs), sinew prominent at the back of the ankle, connecting the tendons of the calf muscles to the heelbone. that also required surgery last winter. Bonilla went on the DL earlier this season with an intestinal obstruction intestinal obstruction Blockage of the small intestine or large intestine, resulting from either lack of peristalsis or mechanical obstruction (e.g., by narrowing, foreign objects, or hernia). Since Lasorda's official title is interim GM, the future is now and there really is no way he is going to let Bonilla go home. Bonilla also is earning $5.9 million this year and will also make that in 1999 and 2000. The Dodgers want Bonilla around for his clubhouse presence and if he can give them one game-winning home run in September, the future will take care of itself. ``But I can't give them that,'' he said. ``There is no bat speed. The way I'm feeling, I can't help anyone right now.'' Switching sides: Lakers guard Eddie Jones, who attended nearby Temple University, was in the Phillies dugout dugout: see canoe. before the game, which upset Lasorda. ``The next time I go to a Lakers game, I'm going to sit on the other team's bench,'' Lasorda said.
