DODGERS NOTEBOOK: ASHBY'S CAREER IN DOUBT.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

Andy Ashby
Andrew Jason (Andy) Ashby (born July 11, 1967 in Kansas City, Missouri) is a former starting pitcher who played for the Philadelphia Phillies (1991-1992, 2000), Colorado Rockies (1993), San Diego Padres (1993-1999, 2004), Atlanta Braves (2000) and Los Angeles Dodgers
will have ``Tommy John'' surgery on his right elbow, officially ending his three-year stint as a Dodger and perhaps his major-league career.

The surgery will be performed by Dr. Frank Jobe on Sept. 28, Sept. 29 or Oct. 1. Ashby is a free agent after the season and won't have rehabilitation under the Dodgers' watch.

``I'm looking at it as a hell of a challenge,'' Ashby said. ``I'll go about the rehab like I'm coming back to pitch. Whether or not I'll get a job at 38, I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

"Don't know the trade." A Street expression used whenever one party lacks knowledge of a trade or receives conflicting instructions from the other party.
. I'll deal with it when it comes.''

If Ashby is able to revive his career, he won't pitch again until 2005. Rehabilitation is expected to take a year.

Ashby, 36, was 3-10 with a 5.18 ERA this season. He was 14-23 with a 4.26 ERA for the Dodgers, winning nine games last year and two in 2000. He also had a season-ending elbow injury in 2000, suffering a tear in the flexor flexor /flex·or/ (flek´ser)
    1. causing flexion.

    2. a muscle that flexes a joint.

This season, Ashby had problems with the ulnar collateral ligament Ulnar collateral ligament can refer to:
    • Ulnar collateral ligament (elbow)
    • Ulnar collateral ligament (wrist)
    • Ulnar collateral ligament (thumb)
, which was partially torn. He was moved in and out of the rotation and finally was replaced by Wilson Alvarez
Wilson Eduardo Alvarez Fuenmayor (born March 24, 1970 in Maracaibo, Zulia State, Venezuela) is a former Major League Baseball left-handed pitcher who played in 13 seasons for the Texas Rangers (1989), Chicago White Sox (1991–1997), San Francisco Giants (1997), Tampa
       in August.

``I'd be willing to bet on him coming back,'' Jobe said.

--Sweet swing: Shawn Green's swing is noticeably different of late, as are the results. Green has five home runs this month after having only 12 before September. He's batting .308 since July 1 and has reached base in 44 of the past 49 games.

Green's swing looks similar to the one that produced 42 home runs last year and 49 in 2001. Dodgers manager Jim Tracy has noticed.

``Very much so, the bat head is traveling that much further,'' Tracy said, indicating a span of about 10 inches. ``What I've observed is that the bat head is traveling that much further. Instead of just missing or not quite enough on it, he's getting enough where he gets plenty of ball.''

In the past two weeks, Green received a cortisone cortisone (kôr`tĭsōn'), steroid hormone whose main physiological effect is on carbohydrate metabolism. It is synthesized from cholesterol in the outer layer, or cortex, of the adrenal gland under the stimulation of adrenocorticotropic  shot for a season-long shoulder injury he recently revealed. Whatever it is, Green seems like Green again.

``They rally around (Green) big time,'' Tracy said of the team. ``They have a tremendous amount of respect for this guy.''

--Giant series: The Dodgers play seven more games with the San Francisco Giants The San Francisco Giants are a Major League Baseball team based in San Francisco, California that currently play in the National League West Division. New York Giants history
Early days and the John McGraw era
, including a three-game series beginning Friday. Tracy doesn't expect to face Jason Schmidt in the final series of the season at San Francisco, but if the Giants clinch the National League West this title week, there could be subtle lineup changes.

``Over the course of the final week of the season I think you'll see some changes there, but they understand the significance of those games and how they affect not only us (in the hunt for the wild card) but two or three other clubs.''
