DODGERS NOTEBOOK: ANTHONY RADIANT REGARDING RAPID RISE.

Byline: Kevin Acee Daily News Staff Writer

A month ago, he was out of baseball. Two weeks ago he was hoping to get some good at-bats and provide some leadership off the bench, having been called up by the Dodgers.

Now - or for now, at least - Eric Anthony Eric Todd Anthony (born November 8, 1967, in San Diego, California) was a Major League Baseball outfielder.

Drafted by the Houston Astros in the 34th round of the 1986 MLB amateur draft, Anthony would make his Major League Baseball debut with the Houston Astros on July 28,
is in a platoon in left field, starting the last four times the Dodgers have faced a right-handed starter.

``That'll work,'' Anthony said, smiling wide and nodding up and down. ``That just goes to show you how quickly things can change.''

Anthony, who left the Texas Rangers' Triple-A club in mid-April when he was passed over for a promotion, signed a minor-league contract with the Dodgers less than two weeks later and was assigned to Triple-A Albuquerque. He was called up May 7 after just five games with the Dukes. He has not started regularly in the majors since 1994 in Seattle.

``I look at it as I'm a Dodger,'' Anthony said. ``My career is starting new.''

Meanwhile, it's the same old story for Billy Ashley Billy Manual Ashley (Born July 11, 1970) in Trenton, Michigan, is a former Major League Baseball outfielder.

Ashley was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 3rd round of the 1988 MLB Draft. He started his professional career with the Gulf Coast Dodgers in 1988 and 1989.
, the man Anthony is taking playing time from. Ashley, who was 5 for 22 while starting seven straight games when Brett Butler Brett Butler can refer to different people:

first got hurt, is not talking about the platoon.

``I've talked about it enough in the past,'' Ashley said Tuesday.

Ashley endured a platoon last season with Todd Hollandsworth Todd Mathew Hollandsworth (born April 20, 1973 in Dayton, Ohio) is an outfielder in Major League Baseball. Previously, Hollandsworth played with the Los Angeles Dodgers (1995-2000), Colorado Rockies (2000-2002), Texas Rangers (2002), Florida Marlins (2003), Chicago Cubs  and patiently answered questions about his lack of playing time this spring.

Roger Cedeno's promotion will make the platoon moot An issue presenting no real controversy.

Moot refers to a subject for academic argument. It is an abstract question that does not arise from existing facts or rights.
. As soon as Hollandsworth's bruised knee is healed, Hollandsworth will move back to left field and Cedeno will play center.

Perhaps the most-anticipated sideline throws this season will take place today when Butler tests his arm for the first time since going on the disabled list May 7 with torn cartilage cartilage (kär`təlĭj), flexible semiopaque connective tissue without blood vessels or nerve cells. It forms part of the skeletal system in humans and in other vertebrates, and is also known as gristle.  in his left shoulder.

``Finally,'' Butler said. ``One way or the other, let's figure it out. Either I can throw or I can't.''

Butler doesn't expect to be able to tell anything by today's tosses. He figures it will be a few days before he will be able to judge the chances of a comeback. What Butler is curious about is the degree of pain he will experience when throwing.
