WASHINGTON - Even as he rejoined the club after a three-day absence
to consider his options, Dodgers left-hander Wilson Alvarez Wilson Eduardo Alvarez Fuenmayor (born March 24, 1970 in Maracaibo, Zulia State, Venezuela) is a former Major League Baseball left-handed pitcher who played in 13 seasons for the Texas Rangers (1989), Chicago White Sox (1991–1997), San Francisco Giants (1997), Tampa announced
his retirement Thursday, effective at the end of the season. Alvarez
will be used in long relief for the rest of the year, then walk away
from what would have been a guaranteed $2 million salary for 2006.
``For me, it's not about money,'' Alvarez said. ``I
want to win. That's the way I was raised. Money isn't
happiness.''
Alvarez, 35, said he made his decision Tuesday, after consulting
with his wife Daihanna and their three daughters. He has experienced
chronic pain in his left shoulder all season, causing him to miss a
total of 67 games during his two stints on the disabled list.
``I appreciate everything this organization did for me,''
Alvarez said. ``The players and the fans have been so great to me.
I'm going to try to finish the season, and the biggest reason I
came back is because I believe we can win the division.''
Upon arriving, Alvarez met privately with Dodgers manager Jim Tracy - This article is about the baseball manager. For the member of the Tennessee Senate, see Jim Tracy (politician).
James Edwin Tracy (born December 31 1955 in Hamilton, Ohio) is a former manager in Major League Baseball who most recently led the Pittsburgh and pitching coach Colborn to determine his role for the rest of the
year. Tracy said that by using Alvarez as his long reliever Long relievers are a type of relief pitcher in baseball. ``The fact that he is handling this situation as professionally as
he is handling it certainly makes a statement as to who he is and what
he's all about,'' Tracy said.
Alvarez, one of the most fan- and media-friendly players in the
game, will go out with 14 years of major-league service time. He has a
career record of 102-92 with a 3.96 ERA, but is 1-4 with a 5.73 in 2005.
