Wilson Eduardo Alvarez Fuenmayor (born March 24, 1970 in Maracaibo, Zulia State, Venezuela) is a former Major League Baseball left-handed pitcher who played in 13 seasons for the Texas Rangers (1989), Chicago White Sox (1991–1997), San Francisco Giants (1997), Tampa

Alvarez was knocked out in the second inning of Friday's 9-2 loss to the New York Mets

when he was struck in the left elbow by a one-hop comebacker from Cliff Floyd. Nomo, who probably won't be activated until the active-roster maximum increases to 40 on Wednesday, made his third rehab start for Triple-A Las Vegas against Fresno on Thursday, striking out 10 batters in 5 1/3 innings and routinely hitting 90 mph on the radar gun.

``The X-rays on (Alvarez's elbow) were negative, but it's very unlikely he'll make his next start,'' Dodgers manager Jim Tracy said. ``It got him pretty good. Obviously, Hideo Nomo will step into that spot.''

Tracy wouldn't pinpoint which game Nomo will start. With an off-day Monday, he could move the rest of the rotation up one day and put Nomo at the back. But the most sound decision probably would be to have Nomo start Thursday at Arizona, which would have been Alvarez's next start. Nomo hasn't appeared in a major league game since June 30 and was maddeningly inconsistent before he went down.

So if starting him again is at least something of a venture into the unknown, that venture is probably better taken against the bottom-feeding Diamondbacks than the Cardinals, who have the league's best record.

--Roster move: The Dodgers announced after the game that they will purchase the contract of left-handed reliever Scott Stewart from Triple-A Las Vegas to bolster a bullpen depleted de·plete

To make room for Stewart on the 25-man roster, right-handed reliever Masao Kida was optioned to Las Vegas. To make room for him on the 40-man, reliever Paul Shuey, who is out for the rest of the year, was moved from the 15- to the 60-day disabled list.

``We just feel like we need another lefty in the bullpen to give us what (Mike) Venafro did for a little while,'' general manager Paul DePodesta said. ``(Stewart) can be a left-on-left guy, but he's more of an inning or two guy.''

Venafro can't return until Sept. 5 because he was optioned to Las Vegas on Tuesday and has to stay at least 10 days.
