"I'm still not as familiar (with DeWitt) as I would I would like to be right now," Torre said. "I rely on my coaches who have seen him. And really, if he happens to make this club, you have to understand that he isn't the answer in order for us to win. We certainly don't want to pile on that kind of responsibility (on) him."

LaRoche isn't expected to return until midseason after having surgery, but Garciaparra continues to improve from a microfacture in his hand after being hit by a pitch.

Both players were injured in the same game during the Grapefruit League portion of the spring schedule.

"At this point, Nomar is just starting to feel better," Torre said. "It's going to be a decision that if somebody feels well enough to play, we have to see if there will be enough at-bats here in the next couple of days to make it make sense.

"I'm not saying you need a lot, as long as everything else is OK. We're going to have to pretty much make a decision by Saturday."
