The Guerrero brothers, finally able to spend a rare day off together, did what any brothers with free time would.

``We bought clothes. And shoes,'' Wilton Guerrero said. ``Then we relaxed. We stayed home.''

Instead of staying at the team hotel, Vladimir stayed with Wilton in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  so the siblings could spend as much time as possible together.

Although Friday's game at Dodger Stadium was their first professional appearance against each other, injuries almost prevented the brothers' big matchup.

Wilton sprained his left shoulder Monday night and missed the past two games. Vladimir made his debut May 3 after being sidelined more than four weeks with a broken bone in his left foot.

Wilton said he was not paying extra attention to how his brother played Friday night or considering the outcome of the game special.

``Whatever happens is OK. He's got to do the job and so do I,'' Wilton said.

Although Vladimir is considered the superior prospect, Dodgers manager Bill Russell lavishly praised his own Guerrero.

``He's really gone beyond our expectations,'' Russell said of Wilton. ``At second base, what can you say? He's made every play. (Offensively) he's responded and done a good job, whether he's (hitting) No. 1 or No. 8.''

Buckle up: The Dodgers' schedule is about to become extremely busy. After concluding the weekend homestand with Montreal, they will be off Monday, then play 15 games in 15 days, including 10 on the road. They will be off only two days the remainder of the month.

``The off days all of a sudden are going to be travel days,'' Russell said.

Stop stealing: Catcher Mike Piazza has thrown out five of his past 10 baserunners, a statistic Russell attributes to the Dodgers' pitching staff as much as Piazza.

``The pitchers are giving him an opportunity (by holding runners on base) and he's worked hard on his throwing,'' Russell said.
