DODGERS HIT THE REWIND BUTTON; A DAY AFTER MONDESI'S HEROICS, SHEFFIELD'S 10TH-INNING HOMER WINS IT : DODGERS 3, ARIZONA 2.Byline: Brian Dohn Daily News Staff Writer It had to be a homer. After pinch-runner Dante Powell stole second with one out, Bernard Gilkey Still, if this is the kind of excitement the new regime is bringing to Dodger Stadium, it may be a good idea to check out some games. A day after Raul Mondesi homered twice in an extra-inning come-from-behind win in the season opener, the Dodgers and Diamondbacks nearly came to blows in what turned into a lively, emotional sixth inning. With the score tied at 2, both clubs' benches and bullpens spilled onto the field after the Diamondbacks' Matt Williams took umbrage when Chan Ho Park's pitch sailed behind the third baseman's head. It came one pitch after Williams, who homered earlier, came within a few feet of another home run, though the ball hooked foul. There were some hairy moments. With all the players milling near the pitcher's mound, Dodgers first baseman Eric Karros was trying to position himself between teammates and several Diamondbacks. Pushing ensued, but no punches were thrown. During the near-altercation, Williams remained near home plate while Park stayed on the pitcher's mound. Earlier in the game, Park hit Bernard Gilkey with a pitch. Gilkey homered twice off Kevin Brown on Monday. However, there's no question what kind of affect the incident had on Park. He struck out Williams on a pitch in the dirt, retired Luis Gonzalez on a grounder to first and then fanned Bernard Gilkey for his first 1-2-3 inning since the first. The irony seemed perfect with Karros up. But Arizona starter Todd Stottlemyre, vociferous in his own right during the skirmish, got Karros to ground into a double play. Mark Grudzielanek popped to short to end the inning. It wasn't the last time Karros or Grudzielanek had an opportunity to put the Dodgers ahead. Gary Sheffield started the eighth with a single and stole second. They went hitless in 11 at-bats with runners in scoring position. For the second straight day the Dodgers were victimized by the long ball. All five of Arizona's runs came via homers the day before, and the Diamondbacks countered an early 2-0 Dodgers lead in the same fashion again. Finley made it 2-1 when he turned on Park's 1-1 pitch and homered to right field. An inning later, Park became a piece of history for Williams. Williams, who's hit at least 20 homers in each of the last nine seasons, crushed Park's first pitch of the fourth inning deep to center field for his first homer of the season. Not only did it tie the game 2-2, but it was Williams' 300th career homer. On the other side of Williams' homer total, and career, is Dodgers third baseman Adrian Beltre, who turns 21 today, the youngest member of a veteran club. Beltre had a spectacular spring, on the heels of a sensational winter in which he was named the Most Valuable Player of the Dominican Winter League. Despite lingering questions about his offense, Beltre quieted the critics in his first at-bat against the Diamondbacks. He lined a two-out, two-run homer to left off Stottlemyre to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
