DODGERS HIT THE JACKPOT L.A. GETS TO N.Y. ACE MARTINEZ, DEFEATS METS DODGERS 8, N.Y. METS 5.

Byline: VINCENT VINCENT Vital Information Necessary Centralized (movie, The Black Hole)  BONSIGNORE Staff Writer

Grady Little William Grady Little (born March 30, 1950 in Abilene, Texas) is a manager in Major League Baseball. He guided the Boston Red Sox from 2002 to 2003, and has been manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers since 2006.  has been around baseball enough to know that statistics and reputations don't necessarily mean a whole lot when game time rolls around.

"When 7:10 gets here you start the game and see what happens," Little said.

Little was talking about the buildup surrounding Tuesday's pitching matchup between Dodgers ace Derek Lowe Derek Christopher Lowe[1] (born June 1, 1973 in Dearborn, Michigan)[2] is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He throws and bats right-handed.  and New York Mets

star Pedro Martinez. Little was as anxious as anyone to see how the game developed - after all, he managed both pitchers in Boston - but he's also seen plenty of would-be pitching duels deteriorate into a battle of the bullpens, so he doesn't assume anything.

"I guarantee that's happened through the course of history," Little said.

It didn't go down quite the way Little warned, but it was close. Martinez got roughed up with a two-run home run in the first inning, then couldn't make it out of the sixth inning. The Dodgers scored a total of seven runs off Martinez - six earned - including a two-run home run by Nomar Garciaparra Anthony Nomar Garciaparra[1] (born July 23, 1973, in Whittier, California) is a Mexican-American baseball player who currently plays third base for the Los Angeles Dodgers.  and rookie Matt Kemp Matthew Ryan Kemp[1] (born September 23, 1984, in Midwest City, Oklahoma)[2] is a Major League Baseball outfielder who plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers. , and the Dodgers went on to defeat the Mets 8-5 at Dodgers Stadium.

Lowe was only slightly sharper than his former Boston teammate, but it was enough for him to battle his way through six innings while giving up five hits and two runs.

Garciaparra - another former Red Sox player - greeted s ex-teammate Martinez with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead. It was Garciaparra's seventh home run and his 40th RBI RBI

But the big inning was the sixth, when the Dodgers sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs.

Kemp got things rolling with a two-run home run off Martinez after J.D. Drew opened the inning with a single.

Kemp, who has been on a tear since joining the Dodgers all the way from Double-A Jacksonville, now has four home runs and 10 RBIs.

Martinez lasted only three more batters after Kemp's homer, in part because the Mets' defense couldn't pick him up. Russell Martin followed with an RBI single to make it 5-2 and end Martinez's evening.

On the night, Martinez gave up six earned runs on eight hits and struck out six.

Heath Bell took over for Martinez and was immediately welcomed by another Valentin error, this one on a high throw to first base on a failed double-play try. Martinez scored on the play to make it 6-2.

The Dodgers added two more runs on a single by Rafael Furcal and a wild pitch by Bell to make it 8-2.

Lowe, who threw 109 pitches in six innings, was lifted in favor of Jonathan Broxton to start the seventh, and Broxton promptly got himself into a bases-loaded jam to set the stage for a three-run Mets rally, as New York New York, state, United States

The Mets brought the tying runner to plate twice against reliever Takashi Saito, but he got Valentin to pop up to first base and struck out Lastings Milledge to end the inning.

Prior to the game, Little said his familiarity with Martinez was not an advantage.

"My prior knowledge of him doesn't concern me as much as his knowledge of us. He's one of the best students of the game," Little said. "He'll come out in the dugout like he did last night while the Mets were hitting and clown around, making all kinds of jokes and funny noises. But as soon as our hitters were at the plate, his eyes were glued on them, formulating a plan for each individual hitter."
