, fresh off losing an opportunity to shove the Dodgers out of the wild-card race, flew in the wee hours and arrived in Milwaukee mid-morning. They man-handled the Brewers.

The Dodgers awakened mid-morning and drove down I-5, an uneventful prelude to their game other than the fact Eric Karros' tire blew out 45 miles north of the city. The Dodgers were pushed around Qualcomm Stadium Los Angeles/San Diego Chargers

Rather than beat up on the last-place San Diego Padres and keep the pressure on the Giants, right-handed Andy Ashby
Andrew Jason (Andy) Ashby (born July 11, 1967 in Kansas City, Missouri) is a former starting pitcher who played for the Philadelphia Phillies (1991-1992, 2000), Colorado Rockies (1993), San Diego Padres (1993-1999, 2004), Atlanta Braves (2000) and Los Angeles Dodgers
was whacked for five runs in two-plus innings as the Dodgers dropped a game in the wild-card race by losing 8-4 Friday.

The Dodgers, who have lost six of their last seven against the Padres, trail the Giants by two games with eight to play.

The Dodgers (86-68) have won the season series from San Diego (65-89) once in the last six seasons, and there's no reason to believe it will chance this year. The Dodgers have lost eight of 13 games to San Diego, a humbling thought since the teams play six more times this season.

And consider this: The Padres are 8-5 (.615) against the Dodgers and 57-84 (.404) against everyone else.

Oh, the Dodgers also will be officially eliminated from the race to win the National League West if Arizona wins or the Dodgers lose today.

Ashby suffered through his worst start since he lasted one inning in an April 4, 1999, loss to the Colorado Rockies For the National Hockey League team (1976 – 1982), now known as the New Jersey Devils, see .

Before the game, Dodgers manager Jim Tracy

said Ashby would start either Wednesday or Thursday, but after his fourth consecutive horrific outing, that might be in question.

Ashby, who last won Aug. 18, allowed eight hits and walked one. He is 0-3 in his last four starts and has a 9.42 ERA. He's also allowed 27 hits and walked nine in 14 1/3 innings spanning those starts, and allowed five unearned runs in a loss to Arizona.

    Dodgers pitching coach Jim Colborn
James William Colborn (born May 22, 1946 in Santa Paula, California) is a former Major League Baseball pitcher.
The right-handed Colborn pitched for the Chicago Cubs (1969-71), Milwaukee Brewers (1972-76), Kansas City Royals (1977-78) and Seattle Mariners (1978).
said he didn't believe fatigue was a factor despite Ashby having pitched 181 2/3 innings. He was limited to 11 2/3 innings in two starts before undergoing elbow surgery last season.

Needing a solid start to maintain momentum after a big win in the series finale

with the Giants, and knowing San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  had a late four-run lead at the time of the game with the Padres, Ashby melted in the third inning.

The Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the inning on Shawn Green's groundout, but it didn't last. In a dreadful spell, Ashby threw 16 pitches in the third inning, allowed six hits and left without recording an out.

Ramon Vazquez led off with a single to left and Mark Kotsay Mark Steven Kotsay (born December 2, 1975) is an outfielder for the Oakland Athletics.

singled to center. Three pitches later the Padres had a 3-1 lead as Ryan Klesko doubled in a run with a line drive to the right-field corner and Phil Nevin drilled a 1-0 pitch into the right-center field gap for a two-run double.

Sean Burroughs singled to left and Gene Kingsale singled to center to make it 4-0 and knock Ashby out. Ashby wasn't ahead in the count against any of the hitters in the inning.

The Padres added another run when Brian Buchanan singled to center off reliever Giovanni Carrara.

Solo homers by Eric Karros and Mark Grudzielanek, his first since Aug. 11, off Padres starter Brett Tomko pulled the Dodgers within 5-3 in the fourth inning, but the Dodgers gave back a run in the bottom of the inning Noun 1. bottom of the inning - the second half of an inning; while the home team is at bat

With the bases loaded and one out, the speedy Kingsale grounded to Karros at first. Karros threw home for the force-out, but catcher Paul Lo Duca's throw back to first sailed into right field and allowed a run to score and put the Padres ahead 6-3.
