DODGERS GO DOWN WITH SOME FIGHTS LITTLE, LUGO, PENNY EJECTED DURING LOSS SAN DIEGO 7, DODGERS 2.Byline: TONY JACKSON

San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay. -- Once a year, on Military Appreciation Day at Petco Park, the San Diego Padres play a home game wearing camouflage jerseys. That event didn't fall on Wednesday night, but it might as well have, because the Padres blended so well into the scenery that the Dodgers didn't seem to notice them. They were too busy doing battle with a different enemy. The Dodgers lost the game, 7-2 in front of 36,613, to shrink their lead over the Padres in the National League West to one. The lanky, red-headed Guccione was born to Italian father Santo and Australian mother Diane. (Lugo) and plate umpire Rick Reed Rick Reed may refer to:
When it was over, Lugo, Penny and Little managed to summon the requisite amount of righteous indignation Righteous indignation is an emotion one feels when one becomes angry over perceived mistreatment, insult, or malice. In some Christian doctrines, righteous indignation is considered the only form of anger which is not sinful. . But it didn't matter much, because while the Dodgers were fighting with the umpires, the Padres were completing a three-game sweep and beating the Dodgers for the 11th time in their past 12 meetings. Lugo's fourth-inning ejection was merely the precursor to what happened shortly thereafter. With Andre Ethier
n. Baseball The infielder stationed near third base. Noun 1. third baseman - (baseball) the person who plays third base third sacker Mark Bellhorn briefly bobbled. But Bellhorn recovered in time to get Lugo by a step, and Lugo expressed his frustration by slamming his helmet to the ground. To which Guccione responded by instantly ejecting him. ``I knew I was out,'' Lugo said. ``I was upset because I had left a runner on third. I wanted to get it done.'' Reed, the umpiring crew chief, later said Lugo was tossed simply for throwing the helmet, not because Guccione thought Lugo was protesting the call. ``It's at the discretion of the umpire,'' Reed said. ``The player should be aware of the situation in the game. After (Lugo's) first at-bat (a second-inning strikeout), he threw his batting gloves, his helmet and his bat.'' It was in the bottom of the fifth that things got really weird. With runners on first and second, none out and the Dodgers already trailing 4-2, Little went to the mound to calm down a struggling Penny. Reed stood no more than 30 feet a way, between the mound and the plate. Dodgers catcher Russell Martin and second baseman Jeff Kent joined the mound meeting. What happened next is a matter of whom you believe. ``(Kent) told Russell those were good pitches,'' said Penny, who besides having just walked Adrian Gonzalez had already met twice with Reed between innings to protest his inconsistent strike zone. ``The umpire said `(Expletive) you,' to Kent. So I said, `Are you talking to me, or are you talking to him?''' Kent later denied that Reed said anything to him. ``He was jawing at Penny,'' Kent said. But Reed's account seemed to jibe with Penny's. ``One of the infielders said something, and I reacted to it,'' he said. At any rate, Little walked off the mound to talk to Reed, then returned to the mound. When Little then left the field and left Penny in the game, Padres manager Bruce Bochy met with the umpires to claim that Little's leaving the dirt circle of the mound to talk to Reed and then returning to it constituted two mound visits, so Penny had to be removed from the game after facing one more batter. The umpires agreed, leading to an argument between Little and Reed that resulted in Little's ejection. Reed then went to the mound to hand Penny the ball and inform him he could face only one more batter, at which point Penny lost his temper and also was ejected. The ensuing melee ended only when Dodgers coaches Mariano Duncan and Dave Jauss guided Penny off the field, with Penny jawing at Reed the whole way. For some reason, second base umpire Ted Barrett followed the Duncan/Jauss/ Penny scrum, jawing at Penny the whole way. ``I was making sure he got to the dugout,'' Barrett said. Penny (13-7) left two runners aboard, both of whom eventually scored to put the game out of reach and leave the Dodgers (66-61) with their fifth loss in their past seven games. tony.jackson@dailynews.com (818) 713-3675 CAPTION(S): 3 photos Photo: (1 -- color) Brad Penny argues with home-plate umpire Rick Reed after being ejected by Reed in the fifth inning.
