SAN DIEGO San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  - Once a year, on Military Appreciation Day at Petco Park, the San Diego Padres play a home game wearing camouflage jerseys. That event didn't fall on Wednesday night, but it might as well have, because the Padres blended so well into the scenery that the Dodgers didn't seem to notice them.

They were too busy doing battle with another perceived enemy.

Dodgers starter Brad Penny Bradley Wayne Penny[1] (born May 24, 1978 in Blackwell, Oklahoma)[2] is a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball for the Los Angeles Dodgers.[3] Early career  fought repeatedly with plate umpire Rick Reed Rick Reed may refer to:

Julio Lugo Julio Cesar Lugo (born on November 16, 1975 in Barahona, Dominican Republic) is a major league shortstop for the Boston Red Sox. He bats and throws right-handed. Lugo is the older brother of baseball pitcher Ruddy Lugo.  fought briefly with first-base umpire Chris Guccione Chris Guccione (born July 30, 1985), is an Australian tennis player from Greenvale, Victoria.

The lanky, red-headed Guccione was born to Italian father Santo and Australian mother Diane.
. Dodgers manager Grady Little William Grady Little (born March 30, 1950 in Abilene, Texas) is a manager in Major League Baseball. He guided the Boston Red Sox from 2002 to 2003, and has been manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers since 2006.  fought gallantly with both Reed and Guccione.

Not surprisingly, the Dodgers lost every one of those skirmishes, with Penny, Lugo and Little all being sent to bed without dinner. With not much fight left for the hard-charging Padres, the Dodgers also lost the game, to the tune of 7-2 in front of 36,613.

When the dust finally had cleared, the Padres had completed a three- game sweep and closed to within a single game of the first-place Dodgers in the pathetic National League West.

The whole debacle began in the bottom of the first inning, when Penny walked three of the first five batters he faced to load the bases with two outs. Geoff Blum Geoffrey Edward Blum (born April 26, 1973 in Redwood City, California) is an infielder for the San Diego Padres. He began his professional career when he was selected in the 7th round of the 1994 amateur draft by the Montreal Expos.  then gave the Padres a 2-0 lead with a two-run single, and Mark Bellhorn Mark Christian Bellhorn (born August 23, 1974 in Weymouth, Massachusetts) is a second baseman for the Cincinnati Reds. He has also played with the Oakland Athletics (1997-98, 2000-01), Chicago Cubs (2002-03), Colorado Rockies (2003), Boston Red Sox (2004-05), New York Yankees  made it 3-0 by rolling a ball just slowly enough to third that he was able to beat it by a step at first.

After striking out Josh Barfield Joshua LaRoy "Josh" Barfield (born December 17, 1982 in Barquisimeto, Lara, Venezuela) is a second baseman for the Cleveland Indians of Major League Baseball.[1] He is the son of former major league outfielder Jesse Barfield.  to finally end the inning, Penny took the scenic route back to the dugout, stopping near home plate for a conversation with Reed.  with the inconsistency of Reed's strike zone, and the discussion quickly reached the point of Penny moving his hands in an animated manner.

That brought Little out of the dugout. He stepped between Penny and Reed, and the situation quickly died down.

Fast forward to the third inning, when Penny gave up another run- scoring, two-out hit to Blum that pushed the Padres' lead to 4-1.

the third out. Again, Penny stopped on his way off the field to talk with Reed, but the discussion didn't last long and didn't appear to be heated.

After Andre Ethier's two-out triple in the fourth scored Kenny Lofton, cutting the Padres' lead to 4-2, Lugo hit a bouncer to third that Bellhorn briefly bobbled.

But Bellhorn recovered in time to get Lugo by a step at first, ending the inning. Lugo, who was clearly out, yanked off his helmet after crossing the bag and slammed it to the ground, his frustration apparently stemming not from Guccione's call but from Bellhorn's having made the play successfully.

Still, Guccione instantly ejected Lugo, causing Lugo and first-base coach Mariano Duncan to explode in disbelief and Little to burst from the dugout. The argument went on for several minutes, with Duncan trying to restrain Lugo, but the ejection stood.

Finally, in the bottom of the fifth, things turned really bizarre.

With runners on first and second, and none out, Little came to the mound for a visit with Penny while Reed stood about 20 feet away between the mound and the plate. During that discussion, Penny and Reed exchanged words again, at which point Little walked over to talk to Reed, then returned to the mound. Eventually, Little went back to the dugout, intending to leave Penny in the game. At that point, Padres manager Bruce Bochy conferred with all four umpires, claiming that Little's stepping out of, then back into, the dirt circle of the pitching mound constituted two mound visits, so Penny had to be removed. The umpires eventually agreed, and Reed summoned Little from the dugout to tell him.

That led to another argument in which Reed eventually ejected Little. Reed then went to the mound to tell Penny he had to leave, leading to another argument in which Reed ejected Penny.

Duncan and bench coach Dave Jauss were guiding an irate Penny off the field while Penny continued to yell at Reed. But Reed, a veteran umpire who wasn't being restrained by anyone, refused to walk away from the argument.

Instead, he followed Duncan, Jauss and Penny and continued to yell at Penny even as Penny was being led away. Third-base umpire Laz Diaz eventually did intervene and nudge Reed away from the scrum.
