Green was a 1st round draft pick, and has been a two-time major league All-Star.

Brown (14-8) allowed six hits in seven scoreless innings to win for the first time in September.

The Dodgers have won seven of nine games but haven't chipped away at the National League wild-card race because the streaking Marlins keep winning. Florida won its seventh consecutive game Saturday, beating Atlanta to remain 2 1/2 games ahead of Philadelphia and 3 1/2 in front of L.A.

Closer Eric Gagne pitched the ninth inning Saturday, entering the game in a nonsave situation. It was an ironic move considering it was a similar situation to Wednesday in Arizona. That game - in which manager Jim Tracy

Outfielder Dave Roberts, who made his second start since missing a week with a sprained neck, reached base in four of five plate appearances.

He drew a walk from starter Jake Peavy in the first inning, then used an infield single to reach base. In the fourth inning, he reached on an error by second baseman Sean Burroughs. In the sixth, he ran out a bunt that pitcher Kevin Walker couldn't make a play on.

Brown, who won 18 games with San Diego in 1998, didn't give up a run and only once allowed a baserunner to reach third. He threw 93 pitches, 62 of which were strikes, and is 13-7 in his last 24 starts.

Alex Cora and Cesar Izturis were up to their usual sparkling defensive plays. Cora made a diving stop to rob Giles of a hit in the sixth inning, flipping the ball with his glove to Izturis, who made the throw in time to first for the double play.

Cora also had two hits and Izturis singled in the second inning.

Peavy struggled, throwing 78 pitches in four innings. He allowed four runs, three of which were earned, and gave up the homer to Green.

Neither Padres starter has lasted five innings in this series; Kevin Jarvis was done after just 4 1/3 Friday.
