DODGERS GET SWEPT AWAY WEBB SHUTS DOWN L.A. AS D'BACKS WIN ARIZONA 3, DODGERS 0.

Byline: ARAM TOLEGIAN

Staff Writer

Manager Grady Little's assessment of what happened to the Dodgers on Sunday afternoon against Arizona had better be right, or fans won't want to see what happens next.

The Diamondbacks concluded their three-game sweep of the Dodgers behind reigning Cy Young award winner Brandon Webb's complete-game, 3-0 victory in front of 48,803 at Dodger Stadium     [ . The result prompted Little to be blunt about the state of his team.

"We kind of reached rock bottom today," Little said. "I feel like that game today kind of bottomed us out."

Reaching the bottom is a good thing, if you see things Little's way. But anyone looking at the standings will see an ever-growing deficit for the Dodgers in the National League West. Arizona increased its lead over the Dodgers to four games.

"To me, no matter where we go, where we play, there's nowhere to go but up," Little said. "Let's see Let's See was a Canadian television series broadcast on CBC Television between September 6, 1952 to July 4, 1953. The segment, which had a running time of 15 minutes, was a puppet show with a character named Uncle Chichimus (voice of John Conway), which presented each  what we can do to get this thing turned around."

Just where the Dodgers go will be Cincinnati, where they'll see if playing one of the NL's worst teams can be the proper elixir elixir /elix·ir/ (e-lik´ser) a clear, sweetened, alcohol-containing, usually hydroalcoholic liquid containing flavoring substances and sometimes active medicinal ingredients.

If things are to turn around the way Little hopes, the Dodgers had better find some offense. They're 1for25 with runners in scoring position In the sport of baseball, a baserunner is said to be in scoring position when he is on second or third base. The distinction between being on first base and second or third base is that a runner on first can usually only score if the batter hits an extra base hit, while a runner on  during their current four-game losing streak.

Webb scattered seven hits, walked none and struck out four. He's now 11-8 and a major reason the Diamondbacks have taken over ownership of the division.

"He's difficult," Little said of Webb. "We knew going into the game it was going to be a low-scoring game and we'd have to win 3-2, 2-1 or something like that. But he was good today. We didn't get much going in any one inning.

"We hit some balls hard. We hit balls a long way that were caught. But that's not good enough. The bottom line is getting it done, and right now, we're not getting it done."

Brad Penny Bradley Wayne Penny[1] (born May 24, 1978 in Blackwell, Oklahoma)[2] is a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball for the Los Angeles Dodgers.[3] Early career  wasn't exactly bad, either. Penny went seven innings, allowed six hits, walked none and struck out five.

Penny (13-3) has lost back-to-back starts after winning three consecutive in July.

"It's going through a funk," Penny said of the team. "We're getting runners in scoring position and we're not getting hits. But we have 51 games left, and some head-to-head with Arizona and San Diego. I've always said it's going to come down to the end of September."

Penny wasn't as confident as Little that things will turn around simply because they can't get any worse.

"When you're going bad, anybody can beat you," Penny said when asked if Reds will be a welcomed sight.

Webb got his cushion early. Upton doubled home Conor Jackson, who led off the second inning with a single. Reynolds, who reached on a single to shallow right, scored moments later on a sacrifice fly by Snyder.

The Dodgers appeared ready to answer in the third inning after Andre Ethier led off with a double. But Penny lined out and Rafael Furcal and Juan Pierre followed with consecutive groundouts.

"We hit some balls hard the whole day, they just didn't find holes," Little said. "That's not what counts in this game. What counts is end results, and our end results were not good."

The Diamondbacks made it 3-0 im the fourth after Jackson, who began the inning with a double, scored on Reynolds' single to center field.

Another opportunity to cut into the lead was squashed by Furcal furcal /fur·cal/ (fur´k'l) shaped like a fork; forked.

 and Pierre in the sixth.

Ethier and Penny singled with one out. This time, the top of the Dodgers order made outs through the air with a flyout by Furcal to center and popout by Pierre to shortstop.

"There are some great teams in the division," Dodgers first baseman James Loney said. "It's one of the best races right now. I'm not going to say I like it. You've got to take it and work hard to get back to the top."
