hadn't won a game in more than eight weeks, a stretch that included a stint on the disabled list with a strained left oblique and four consecutive losses in which his San Diego Padres never scored more than two runs for the veteran right-hander.

Luckily for Williams, the Dodgers were in town Tuesday, and they proved to be the perfect cure for a lack of run support. For everyone else, they proved yet again to be the perfect cure for insomnia.

The Padres still failed to score more than two runs, but against the Dodgers' anemic offense, that proved to be plenty for Williams, who earned a 2-1 victory in front of 35,135 at Petco Park.

The Dodgers came dangerously close to being shut out for what would have been the third time in five days, their only run scoring on a broken-bat blooper by the light-hitting Jason Grabowski Jason Grabowski (born May 24, 1976 in New Haven, Connecticut) is a Major League Baseball player. In the 2005 offseason, his contract was sold to the Orix Buffaloes of Japan's Pacific League.  that fell into shallow center field with two outs in the seventh inning. That brought Antonio Perez in from third and moved Jason Phillips Jason Phillips can refer to:

to second, but the slumping Cesar Izturis then grounded into a force at second to end the inning.

Izturis has just three hits in his past 50 at-bats, and the Dodgers have just one hit in their past 14 with runners in scoring position In the sport of baseball, a baserunner is said to be in scoring position when he is on second or third base. The distinction between being on first base and second or third base is that a runner on first can usually only score if the batter hits an extra base hit, while a runner on , including three hitless at-bats in the ninth inning against Padres' closer Trevor Hoffman Trevor William Hoffman (October 13, 1967 in Bellflower, California) is a relief pitcher in Major League Baseball who has played for the San Diego Padres since 1993. He bats and throws right-handed.  after putting the tying run on second without a hit.

The loss was the Dodgers' eighth in a row, their longest of this season and matching their longest of last season. More than anything, it was the perfect ending to a day when the Dodgers officially lost Eric Gagne for the rest of the season and are beginning to lose hope of a second consecutive division title in the National League West.

The third-place Dodgers (33-37) trail the division-leading Padres by 6 1/2 games.

Tuesday was Derek Lowe's turn to be victimized by the nightly lack of run support that has plagued every Dodgers starter of late. Lowe (5-8) wasn't completely without fault - he walked a season high-tying four batters, including the leadoff man and one other batter in a two-run Padres fourth that ultimately decided the outcome.

Lowe actually stood at the brink of escaping a bases-loaded jam for the second successive inning after walking former Dodger Dave Roberts For other uses, see Dave Roberts (disambiguation).

Jason Repko to give the Padres a two-run lead that proved insurmountable for the punchless Dodgers.

Williams (3-5) was anything but spectacular in the early going, but the Dodgers were nothing if not accommodating, doing Williams every favor they possible could to help him escape unscathed.

After Izturis led off the game with a single, Repko, J.D. Drew and Jeff Kent made outs hitting the ball in the air. After Olmedo Saenz and Jayson Werth began the second with consecutive singles, Perez bunted into a tag play at third, and Phillips and Lowe flied out. After Williams walked Drew with two outs in the third, Kent grounded out.

That was the first of 12 consecutive batters retired by Williams before the Dodgers' modest, one-run rally in the seventh, an effort that fell well short of what they needed.

Hoffman, whose older brother, Glenn, still hasn't sufficiently recovered from his concussion to return to the third-base coaching box for the Dodgers, worked the ninth for his 19th save. For his career, Trevor Hoffman has converted 47 of his 49 save opportunities against the Dodgers, 20 of 20 at home.
