DODGERS CRACK IN EIGHTH OPPORTUNISTIC ATLANTA MAKES THE MOST OF L.A.'S WILDNESS ATLANTA 5, DODGERS 3.

. This is why the Dodgers lost five in a row to the Braves, and why they still must prove why they should be considered a playoff threat.

The Braves hung around long enough to overcome their mistakes. The Dodgers let Atlanta hang around long enough until the Dodgers made mistakes.

It all came together, or apart, in a three-run eighth inning as the Braves rallied for a 5-3 win against the Dodgers on Tuesday in front of 30,246 at Dodger Stadium     [ .

The Dodgers left 10 runners on base, failed to score in a bases-loaded, none-out situation, went 2 for 13 with runners in scoring position In the sport of baseball, a baserunner is said to be in scoring position when he is on second or third base. The distinction between being on first base and second or third base is that a runner on first can usually only score if the batter hits an extra base hit, while a runner on , walked 10 Braves (seven by Chan Ho Park for the second straight start), committed two errors, threw a wild pitch and had a passed ball.

``Basically, we gave them the game,'' Dodgers catcher Todd Hundley

(2-2) lost in relief while Bruce Chen (4-0) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to record the win. Atlanta closer John Rocker got Gary Sheffield to fly out to center with two runners on for his seventh save.

``They just feel like no matter what happens, they know they're going to win,'' Dodgers shortstop Kevin Elster said. ``They deserved it. They got some breaks. They took advantage of the mistakes we made, and we didn't take advantage of their mistakes. It's always frustrating to lose. Very frustrating. Frustrating as hell. But you tip your hat to them. Their guys made some pitches.''

Probably the toughest night belonged to Sheffield. He's carried the offense the past month, leading the Dodgers with 10 homers, 22 RBI RBI

and a .330 average. But he had a horrific time against Atlanta, hitting into three double plays.

To add insult, Dodgers center fielder Devon White jammed his left shoulder diving for a ball in the top of the ninth inning. He left the game and will be re-evaluated today.

``Hopefully, it's a bruise,'' said White, who had offseason surgery on the shoulder. ``It's sore right now. It hurts right now.''

An excruciating evening really began to turn painful in the bottom of the seventh. The Dodgers led 3-2, but they were on the verge On the Verge (or The Geography of Yearning) is a play written by Eric Overmyer. But Sheffield bounced back to Chen (4-0), who threw to home to start the double play. Dave Hansen struck out to end the inning.

The Braves countered in the top of the eighth when Adams walked the first two hitters. A wild pitch moved them over a base and Andruw Jones singled to center to give the Braves a 4-3 lead.

``It's a tough one, to beat yourself,'' Adams said. ``I think I tried to nibble Half a byte (four bits).

too much. My approach is pretty much aggressive, go after them. I got away from my game.''

Mike Fetters relieved Adams and with runners on second and third and one out got Andres Galarraga to ground to third. Adrian Beltre threw home to get Andruw Jones at the plate for the second out and keep the deficit at one run. But the Dodgers gave the run up anyway when Fetters' pickoff pick·off

``There have been some games during the streak we should have lost,'' Braves third baseman Chipper Jones said. ``Like tonight, Sheffield is up with the bases loaded and no outs, and getting out of that without a run is probably the farthest thing from anybody's mind at that point.''
