The Dodgers hitters, however, had no trouble seeing Brian Lawrence Brian Michael Lawrence (born May 14, 1976, in Fort Collins, Colorado. Lawrence stands at 6'0" tall and weighs 195 pounds. Or, for that matter, hitting him.

For the second time in the past 10 days, the Dodgers battered the Padres right-hander. This time, they made it count, holding on for a 7-5 victory in front of 40,104 at Petco Park.

The Dodgers banged out 15 hits against the Padres on opening day at Dodger Stadium     [ , eight of them coming off Lawrence. But for all the time Lawrence spent against the ropes that afternoon, the Dodgers never could deliver the knockout punch. They wasted numerous prime scoring opportunities, scratched out just two runs and saw Lawrence earn the win despite the fact he was so ineffective.

Given another crack at Lawrence in the rubber game of a three-game series, the Dodgers quickly got redemption. Trailing 3-0 after two innings, they scored four runs in the third, then tacked on a fifth in the fourth. Both rallies began with leadoff extra-base hits by Alex Cora José Alexander (Alex) Cora (born October 18, 1975 in Caguas, Puerto Rico) is a utility infielder for the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball. Lawrence was lifted with one out in the sixth, having given up nine hits and five earned runs.

The Dodgers (6-3) won their third consecutive series to begin the season and expanded their lead over idle San Francisco in the National League West to a full game. But the news wasn't entirely good. First baseman Shawn Green, who broke out of a season-long slump by going 7 for 10 in the series, left after four innings with tightness in his right groin.

It wasn't immediately clear how serious the injury was.

Cora began the big inning with a triple just inside the first-base bag and into the right-field corner, his second of the season. One out later, Dave Roberts brought him home with a sacrifice fly, but the rally was far from over. Cesar Izturis singled to right and scored the second run on Milton Bradley's bloop bloop   Baseball

Green then tied the game with a single to right, just beyond the reach of lunging second baseman Mark Loretta.  Juan Encarnacion put the Dodgers in front to stay with yet another single to center to score Green.

The Dodgers added a run in the fourth when Cora led off with a double and eventually scored on Bradley's two-out single. They tacked on two more in the seventh. Padres reliever Eddie Oropesa walked Bradley to begin the inning. Robin Ventura, who took over for Green at first, followed with a double to the wall in right-center, scoring Bradley. Lo Duca's grounder moved Ventura to third, and Encarnacion's single brought him in.

Hideo Nomo (2-1) wasn't much more effective than Lawrence. He hung on through the requisite five innings but left for a pinch hitter in the sixth after giving up three runs on six hits. Nomo gave up first-inning solo homers to Loretta and Phil Nevin after the Padres played five previous games in their new downtown home without hitting one.

The Dodgers had a chance to rebound quickly against Lawrence (1-1) in the second but ran themselves out of it. Green drew a leadoff walk, and after Lo Duca grounded into a force play, Encarnacion doubled into the left-field corner, putting Lo Duca on third. Adrian Beltre then flied out to shallow right, but with the slumping Cora and Nomo coming up next, Lo Duca tried to tag up and score.

Padres right fielder Brian Giles threw him out by five feet, and San Diego padded its lead against Nomo in the bottom of the inning Noun 1. bottom of the inning - the second half of an inning; while the home team is at bat

Padres starting pitchers are now a combined 5 for 13 in six games against the Dodgers this year. Lawrence is 3 for 4.

Eric Gagne retired the final four Padres hitters for his second save.
