With a run already in, the Padres had the bases loaded with none out in the seventh of a tie game but didn't score again. The Dodgers turned around and hit the three homers off Padres reliever Rudy Seanez to win their third in a row.

``That's a credit to those guys,'' Dodgers center fielder Tom Goodwin

said. ``It's a clutch situation, you just give up a run to tie it, and they came through to put us back in front and not let them seize the momentum too much. Those times are key. If you can have the momentum, give it up and get it right back, that's big. As the season goes on, if you can counterpunch, that's what you need to do.''

The Dodgers (41-37) again are tied for second with San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  in the National League West, six games behind In sports, the phrase games behind, often abbreviated as GB in tables, is a common way to reflect the gap between a leading team and another team in a sports league, conference, or division.  idle Arizona.

Giovanni Carrara Giovanni Carrara [car-RAH-ra] (born March 4, 1968 in Anzoátegui State, Venezuela) is a relief pitcher in Major League Baseball who most recently pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Carrara bats and throws right handed. He has established himself as a valuable middle relief man.  (1-1) recorded his first win as a Dodger despite allowing one run while pitching the seventh inning. Jeff Shaw pitched the ninth for his first save since June 13. It also was his 20th save, the sixth consecutive year he's reached that mark. Seanez (0-1) was the loser.

Mark Grudzielanek returned from the 15-day disabled list but went 0 for 4 and had his hitting streak snapped at 13 games. Playing for the first time in six games, first baseman Eric Karros had a key hit in the Dodgers' four-run fifth inning.

With Grudzielanek and Karros in the lineup, the injury-ravaged Dodgers began a game with their projected lineup for the second time. The other time was May 21, but Karros left in the eighth inning with a back injury.

``We've been playing great, the way we came back and won the last two games in San Francisco and the way the bats have come around,'' Carrara said. ``After they scored that run to tie the game, I just tried to hold the team right there because I knew we'd come back and win the game.''

Luke Prokopec, pitching with flu symptoms, gave the Dodgers a solid start but had no decision. He allowed solo homers to Mark Kotsay, Bubba Trammell and former Dodgers catcher Rick Wilkins in six innings and left with a 4-3 lead. Prokopec, who walked one and struck out two, has given up a staff-high 16 homers this season.

Carrara might be going through the second-time-around syndrome. He's had trouble in his last few outings, and it didn't take long for him to fritter away to diminish; to pare off; to reduce to nothing by taking away a little at a time; also, to waste piecemeal; as, to fritter away time, strength, credit, etc. s>

Shortstop D'Angelo Jimenez tied it 4-4 with a ground-rule double to right-center and Carrara got in further trouble by walking pinch hitter Ben Davis to load the bases. But he struck out Damian Jackson and got Kotsay to hit into a double play.

Sheffield and Green then hit back-to-back homers for the first time this season. The hits came on consecutive pitches with none out. It was the seventh time this season the Dodgers hit back-to-back homers and, after Beltre's shot with two outs, the first time they homered three times in one inning this season.

``The big thing was getting out of that inning with one run and when had the heart of the order up,'' Green said. ``That was the momentum shift over to our side. Had they scored a couple more runs, thing might have been a little more different, but getting out of that inning still tied enabled us to get a change to go ahead with the heart of our order.''
