DODGERS BEING WASHED AWAY.

Byline: Steve Dilbeck Staff Writer

The Dodgers entered the game with a nifty little scoreless streak going, having not allowed a run in their past 19 innings.

He was released by the Nationals on August 25, 2006 and signed with the Dodgers and released from them on March 12, 2007.  opened with a walk before light-hitting shortstop Desi Relaford Desmond Lamont Relaford (born September 16, 1973 in Valdosta, Georgia) is an American professional baseball infielder who is currently in the Texas Rangers organization. He has previously played for the Colorado Rockies, Kansas City Royals, Seattle Mariners, New York Mets, San  jumped on Gagne's second offering, driving it over the right-field fence for a quick 2-0 San Diego lead. It was Relaford's fifth home run of the season.

The Dodgers threatened in the bottom of the inning when Tom Goodwin singled and Mark Grudzielanek was hit by a Jay Witasick pitch.

But Witasick, a former Kansas City Royal facing Los Angeles for the first time, avoided trouble by striking out the heart of the Dodgers' order - Shawn Green, Eric Karros and Todd Hundley.

The Dodgers got one back, however, in a hurry in the second. Chris Donnels, again starting in left for Gary Sheffield (back sprain sprain, stretching or wrenching of the ligaments and tendons of a joint, often with rupture of the tissues but without dislocation. Sprains occur most commonly at the ankle, knee, or wrist joints, causing pain, swelling, and difficulty in moving the involved joint. ), jumped on a Witasick offering, sending it out to straight-away center.

It was Donnels' fourth home run in 27 at-bats for the Dodgers, which, it turns out, is a career high. Donnels spent small parts of five seasons in the majors, before spending the last four playing in Japan.

It was still a 2-1 game in the top of the fourth when Gagne was hit on the wrist by the comebacker from little-used Padre outfielder Kory DeHaan.

Gagne snapped his hand in pain, picked up the ball and threw late to first as he fell backwards. He was examined by trainer Stan Johnston and, after a couple of throws to test the wrist, was allowed to remain in the game to face Witasick.

Homeplate umpire Randy Marsh lost track of the count to Witasick and awarded him first on what was actually a 3-2 count. But the Dodgers took that opportunity to lift Gagne and bring on rookie Luke Prokopec.

Gagne is scheduled to have precautionary X-rays this morning.

Prokopec threw one pitch for a ball to complete the walk to Witasick and got Jackson to fly to left for the second out, before Marsh called the rain delay.

Three times the grounds crew started to take the tarp off, before just enough more rain fell to send it back on the field.
