It won't ever become one of Los Angeles' 100 greatest sports moments.

Dennis Eckersley's already done that gig, and Sunday's stage wasn't near as daunting daunt

as the one in 1988, when he unwittingly backdoor-slidered himself into Dodgers lore.

However, for the Dodgers, their latest Eck wreck was pretty darn satisfying.

They defeated the St. Louis Cardinals For the National Football League team that played in St. Louis from 1960 to 1987, see .

, consecutively against Eckersley after two were out, allowed the Dodgers to win for the eighth time on the 10-game homestand and for the 18th time in their last 23 games.

The frenetic eighth inning grew out of seven stale innings before it, in which the Dodgers left 11 runners on base. It grew out of 4-1/3 scoreless innings from the bullpen, after starter Tom Candiotti

termed a couple of meaningless walks in the eighth inning, but Eckersley knew better. There is no such thing as a meaningless walk for Eckersley, not at Dodger Stadium.

``This park,'' he said with a sigh, ``hasn't been too good to me.''

Eckersley, who has saved more games than all but two other pitchers, entered with two out, two on and the score 5-2, Cardinals. He's made a career out of those situations.

His first two pitches to Mondesi were strikes, and the Cardinals and Eckersley were that close to extending their lead over the Houston Astros “Astros” redirects here. For other uses, see Astros (disambiguation).

``I just couldn't put him away,'' Eckersley said.

Starting at 0-and-2 to Mondesi, Eckersley threw three consecutive balls outside of the strike zone, at least one that would have been strike three in the American League. Mondesi fouled off the next three pitches and then grounded the last, the ninth pitch from Eckersley, into left field. The Cardinals still led 5-3.

``I thought that I had to put the ball in play,'' Mondesi said, ``no matter what.''

Against Karros, Eckersley was ahead 0-and-2, then 1-and-2, before Karros lashed an opposite-field double that bounded over the short fence. The Cardinals still led 5-4.

Against Wallach, Eckersley was ahead 0-and-1, before Wallach lined a single to left field that scored Mondesi and Karros. The Dodgers led 6-5.

        Wallach had three RBI RBI

, all in the final two innings, all after there were two out. The Dodgers are 24-9 since he returned from his Anaheim exile. Wallach, at 39, has started all but three of those games.

``I don't move as well as I used to,'' Wallach said. ``My bat's not as quick as it used to be. But I want to win. That's important. I can't do all the things I used to, but I can still do some things to help this team win.''

After Wallach's hit, Worrell waded through Ray Lankford, Ron Gant and Brian Jordan in the ninth inning.

He said that that kind of comeback, with 35,803 fans at once cheering the hits and mocking the Eck, ``put me in the frame of mind instantly.''

``I think the team showed a lot of guts,'' Worrell said. ``That's the way this thing is going to be won.''

        It has been convincing lately.

``It tells you more about the character of this team,'' Russell said. ``(The Cardinals) were thinking about packing the bats, I'm sure.

``To come back like this against Eckersley, that tells you something about this team.''
