DODGERS' WEEKEND TURNS SOUR; GLARING MISTAKES COSTLY AS ANGELS AVOID A SWEEP : ANGELS 7, DODGERS 5.

Byline: Matt McHale Daily News Staff Writer

Under a harsh spotlight all season, the Dodgers looked up at the glare of the Sunday sun The Sunday Sun is a regional Sunday newspaper for North East England, Cumbria and the Scottish Borders, published in Newcastle Upon Tyne by Trinity Mirror. It is the sister paper of the weekday newspapers the Evening Chronicle and The Journal.  and wilted again.

They had a chance to sweep the crosstown Angels at the beginning of a lengthy stretch at home, but rather than grab a little momentum they stumbled again in a 7-5 loss in front of 53,778 at Dodger Stadium     [ .

Previously, Glaus played with the Anaheim Angels (1998-2004) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (2005). .

White also got caught off first base in the first inning when the Dodgers looked like they could put away Angels starter Ken Hill. Two innings later, they were playing catch-up the rest of the way.

``The Angels are a good ballclub and we're still struggling,'' said White, who had five hits in the series, including a two-out, two-run single in the first. ``We let a lot of things get away today. And then there was my dumb baserunning.''

With the exception of three games next weekend in Oakland, the Dodgers are at home until June 25, a good time to make a run.

Instead, there is uncertainty. The club is facing the suspension of Chan Ho Park, whose fight with the Angels' Tim Belcher

The Angels headed to San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  after the game for three games with the Giants. During the same June stretch, they are on the road, except for three games against Arizona, one of the hottest teams in baseball.

``To get this game after the way things had been going was important,'' said the Angels' Mo Vaughn
Maurice Samuel 'Mo' Vaughn (born December 15, 1967 in Norwalk, Connecticut), nicknamed "Hit Dog", (a nickname given to him by his Omega Psi Phi fraternity brothers at Seton Hall University) was a Major League Baseball first baseman from 1991 to 2003.
, who went 3 for 12 against the Dodgers. ``It was big.''

Losing two of three actually didn't look so bad to embattled Angels manager Terry Collins, after watching his club blow four-run leads in each of the first two games and fall behind 2-0 on Sunday.

Collins arrived here amid a mutiny by players upset that he is being considered for a contract extension.

``With all that has happened, I think we moved forward this weekend,'' he said. ``Not the way we lost those games, but with the way we came together. There was a lot of dialogue in the clubhouse, a lot of spirit on the bench. That was a good sign.''

So were the home runs by Glaus in the sixth and Darin Erstad Darin Charles Erstad (born June 4, 1974 in Jamestown, North Dakota) is a first baseman/center fielder in Major League Baseball currently with the Chicago White Sox. Both came off Dodgers starter Carlos Perez (2-7), who was coming off his best outing, a 2-1 victory over Atlanta last Sunday.

Perez never was sharp, allowing nine hits and seven runs in 6-2/3 innings. He was given a 2-0 lead in the first because of control problems by Hill (3-4), but quickly gave it back.

It's hard to know what he was thinking since he left without comment after the game. But Perez couldn't have liked the way White ran the Dodgers out of the first inning or the way his teammates battled the sun and lost.

In the second inning, when the Dodgers did catch the ball, Raul Mondesi's strong throw to the plate skipped off the glove of rookie catcher Angel Pena, enabling Garret Anderson Garret Joseph Anderson (born June 30, 1972 in Los Angeles, California) is a Major League Baseball left fielder who has played his entire career for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  to score.

Anderson finished with four hits and three runs, raising his average to .296. Glaus went 2 for 4 and 6 for 11 with two homers against the Dodgers.

``It's a tough road ahead, but it's been tough so far and we're still standing,'' Collins said.

Sheffield's homer cut the Angels lead to 6-3 in the sixth, Hill's last inning. It was Sheffield's 13th homer and third in four games. Dave Hansen

made it 7-5 in the seventh with a two-run pinch single off left-hander Scott Schoeneweis.

But the Dodgers could get no closer. Troy Percival entered the game with two outs in the eighth and put them away for his 16th save.

Then they went their separate ways, meeting again in Anaheim during the middle of July.

``Rivalry? I don't think so,'' White said. ``There is a lot more to think about.''
