He was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the San Francisco Giants of the National League in 2003 after attending Illinois State  to score Jeff Kent with the winning run.

It was the second comeback win in two days for the Dodgers, who beat the Giants on Tuesday with a two-run home run from Kent in the bottom of the 10th.

Kent added his 27th home run Wednesday and Jose Cruz hit two home runs and drove in four runs. Cruz has three home runs in two days.

Under ideal circumstances, Izturis can expect to begin throwing a baseball after seven months, according to team physician Dr. Frank Jobe, but his availability for the beginning of next season is in serious doubt.

``It's one more thing we have to deal with this year and one thing we have to bring into next season,'' Dodgers manager Jim Tracy said.

Jobe said Izturis' troubles actually began when Izturis injured the elbow as a 13-year-old. Izturis managed to deal with the discomfort over the years, but as the pain has increased recently, his ability to throw the ball has been affected.

``He's not able to tolerate (the pain) or throw like he used to,'' Jobe said.

Izturis has been on the disabled list since Aug. 23 with a sprained lower back. He was available to come off the DL on Wednesday, but that return was pushed back because of continued back pain and the discomfort he was experiencing in the elbow after some recent throwing and fielding workouts.

on Tuesday revealed how serious that elbow pain really was.

``He was pretty sad, but I think he also thought it was inevitable because of the pain he was experiencing,'' Jobe said.

Tracy was stunned by the news.

``That's not something you ever assume will be the case,'' Tracy said. ``But at the same time, when someone like (Izturis) starts telling you something's wrong, you pay attention to it.''

Unlike most pitchers who undergo Tommy John surgery, Izturis did not suffer a major ligament injury. However, the constant stretching of the elbow ligament over the years has put pressure on the area he originally injured as a teenager, resulting in the arthritic condition.

Jobe is hopeful that a successful operation will tighten up the medial - or the inside - of Izturis' elbow, thus lessening the pressure on the outer part of the elbow.

The Dodgers have now lost two starters for the rest of the season due to injury over the past two weeks - Izturis follows Milton Bradley, who underwent successful season-ending knee surgery Wednesday in Cincinnati.

In addition, pitcher Eric Gagne is out for the season with an elbow injury and outfielder J.D. Drew has been on the disabled list since July 4 with a broken left wrist. Drew has started some bat-swinging sessions, but still reports pain and tightness in the wrist. Even if Drew does return this year, he isn't expected to be close to 100 percent, according to Tracy.

Izturis is one of only three Dodgers regulars to appear in more than 100 games this year, joining Kent (130) and Jason Phillips, who has played in 110 games. Jason Repko, a reserve outfielder, has appeared in 108 games.

The Dodgers have accumulated 983 DL games, and nine players are currently on the disabled list.

--Note: Barry Bonds didn't get a chance to play in a simulated game at Dodger Stadium before the Giants played the Dodgers on Wednesday. The Dodgers made sure of it.

The Dodgers' team photo shoot, which took place in the outfield, went longer than expected. As a result, the Giants had to scrap plans to monitor Bonds' baserunning during the simulated game.

Bonds, who hasn't played this year because of a knee injury, is expected to join the Giants' lineup in the coming days.
