DODGERS' HOPES TAKE A ROCKY TURN COLORADO 5, DODGERS 4.

Byline: Brian Dohn Staff Writer

DENVER - Right-hander Kevin Beirne's spot start turned out to be the last thing the Dodgers needed to worry about.

A running mistake, a defensive hiccup hiccup or hiccough, involuntary spasmodic contraction of the diaphragm followed by a sharp intake of air, which is abruptly stopped by a sudden, involuntary closing of the glottis (opening between the vocal cords); the consequent blocking of air  and a blown two-run lead by the bullpen that included three consecutive walks - including Paul Shuey Paul Kenneth Shuey (born September 16, 1970 in Lima, Ohio), is a Major League relief pitcher most recently for the Baltimore Orioles.

with the bases loaded and the score tied in a treacherous seventh inning - overshadowed Beirne's first start in two years.

It's not exactly the ideal way to remain in the National League wild-card hunt. And with precious few games remaining, a few more lapses like the Dodgers had in their 5-4 loss to the Colorado Rockies For the National Hockey League team (1976 – 1982), now known as the New Jersey Devils, see .

could mean the end of playoff dreams.

The Dodgers dropped a game behind San Francisco in the wild-card race, have lost six of seven and are battling with playoff race highs and lows.

``You see a (guy) come out like Beirne and throw a great game, and to see it all fall apart in the seventh inning is really frustrating,'' said Dodgers left fielder Brian Jordan, who homered and doubled. ``You can't walk a guy in that situation. Late in the game you have to make them beat you with the bat. You can't give them a free pass. We gave free passes, and it cost us.''

The meltdown began before the walks. Leading 4-2 in the seventh inning, the Dodgers had a chance to break open the game. However, with runners on first and second, Marquis Grissom singled to shortstop, beating the throw to first. But Alex Cora tried to score from second and was thrown out easily by Gold Glover Todd Helton, ending the inning with Paul Lo Duca Paul Anthony Lo Duca (born April 12, 1972 in Brooklyn, New York) is a catcher in Major League Baseball who plays for the New York Mets. ``It's a tough ballgame to lose, but it's one we have to flush out of our system and come back in here (today) and go right back to work,'' Dodgers manager Jim Tracy said. ``I'm not going to criticize one of my players for being aggressive, but it's a situation where if you could have it back, obviously, more than likely you'd like to have one more hitter take a shot with the bases loaded and a 4-2 lead at the time.''

, when Juan Uribe (four hits) singled off the glove of reliever Guillermo Mota (1-3). Juan Pierre walked and Brent Butler singled to center to score Uribe. When Grissom bobbled the ball in center field, the speedy Pierre scored to tie it 4-4.

Reliever Jesse Orosco got Larry Walker to pop out. After Butler stole second, Helton was walked intentionally. Shuey relieved and walked Todd Zeile to load the bases, then walked in a run when he couldn't finish Norton after having a 2-2 count. It gave the Rockies a 5-4 lead.

``I tried to go fastball in and pulled it a little bit,'' Shuey said. ``I guess maybe I didn't quite want to challenge him with a fastball. I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

. That was very bad. I felt good about throwing that pitch, but just didn't get it done. I think the curveball the pitch before was a pretty big pitch, and when I didn't get it over the plate that probably led to less confidence in the next pitch.''
