DODGERS' HOPES FOR PLAYOFFS END SAN FRAN. 4, DODGERS 0.

Byline: Staff Writer

Twenty-five minutes before the Dodgers took the field to be soundly beaten by San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  4-0 Wednesday, they had a chance to sit in the clubhouse and watch the Mets beat Atlanta to end offcially the Dodgers' playoff fantasy.

The Dodgers then played as if they had just had the last breath stomped out of them - you know, as they've played most of the season.

``Now we play for second place,'' Dodgers closer Jeff Shaw

While the Dodgers' top three starters have all had strong seasons, anyone they've tried in the fourth and fifth spots has experienced all sorts of difficulty. Entering Wednesday's game, the fourth and fifth starters were a combined 10-25 with a 6.38 ERA.

Though Prokopec was solid in two other starts, he allowed four runs in five innings against the Giants to further pad the brutal numbers of the back end of the rotation.

That glaring gap, which was insufficiently filled by Carlos Perez, OrelHershiser, Mike Judd Michael Galen Judd (born June 30, 1975, in San Diego, California) was a Major League Baseball right-handed pitcher.

Drafted by the New York Yankees in the 9th round of the 1995 MLB amateur draft, Judd would make his Major League Baseball debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers on
