Jeff Kent Jeffrey Franklin Kent (born March 7, 1968 in Bellflower, California) is a Major League Baseball player for the Los Angeles Dodgers and a former MVP winner. Early career  was exaggerating, but only slightly.

Minutes after the Dodgers completed a three-game sweep of Cincinnati and ran their two-year winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins

over the hapless Reds to nine -- this time riding a five-run, eighth-inning rally to a 10-5 victory in front of 41,399 on Sunday at Dodger Stadium     [  -- Kent was asked specifically about the offensive outburst by his once-punchless team, which scored in double figures for just the third time this season.

, always the subtle contrarian, answered by referring to the Reds' big offensive moment, a three-run home run by Ken Griffey Ken Griffey may refer to:
  • Ken Griffey, Sr. (born 1950), a retired Major League Baseball player, and the father of Ken Griffey, Jr.
  • Ken Griffey, Jr. (born 1969), a current Major League Baseball player for the Cincinnati Reds
Jr. that temporarily put Cincinnati on top in the fourth inning.

"I think Griffey's homer woke us up to the reality that we needed to score some runs if we were going to win," Kent said. "We have been playing some small-ball games for a while, especially during day games after night games.

"We seem to struggle to get ourselves out of bed and walk to the plate and score some runs. Pitchers seem to have the advantage against us in the daytime.

"But that showed us we needed to pick up the pace."

In fact, the Dodgers' offensive breakthrough already was in full swing by the time Griffey connected off Mark Hendrickson Mark Allan Hendrickson (born June 23, 1974 in Mount Vernon, Washington, U.S.) is an American professional athlete and is one of just 10 athletes to play in both Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association. .

The previously slumping Rafael Furcal Rafael Antoni Furcal[1] (born August 24, 1977 in Loma de Cabrera, Dominican Republic),[2] nicknamed "Fookie", is a shortstop in Major League Baseball who plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers.  already was twoplate appearances into what became his 13th career four-hit game. Nomar Garciaparra, who struggled so mightily on the recent road trip, already had twohits, continuing a weekend-long tear that saw him go 8 for 13. And even Wilson Betemit, starting at third base for just the second time since prospect Andy LaRoche was called up from the minors, had a double.

But Kent's point wasn't lost. Because even if it didn't come from Griffey's homer, something crashed the Dodgers' season-long offensive slumber party. The result was that they scored 19 runs in the three-game series, giving them a touch of momentum as they now prepare to face a team they haven't beaten since 2005.

as they once were, begin a three-game series at Chavez Ravine tonight. The Cardinals aren't scheduled to start a pitcher with an ERA below 4.00.

"I think the confidence was there anyway," Dodgers left fielder Luis Gonzalez said. "But you're going to struggle in certain areas throughout the season. This early in the season, your average can go from .230 to .270 or .280 in two days. You just keep going out there and swinging the bats and continuing to do the little things like drawing walks. Guys just have to be consistent. Kent and Russell Martin have been our two most consistent players all year, and if some other guys get hot, it will help our ballclub a lot."

The Dodgers answered Griffey's blast by first chipping away at the Reds' 5-3 lead.

They cut it in half on Kent's fourth home run of the season in the fifth, then erased it when LaRoche stormed home from third after Furcal furcal /fur·cal/ (fur´k'l) shaped like a fork; forked.

stole second in the sixth. As he slid in, Furcal knocked the ball loose from shortstop Alex Gonzalez. Gonzalez couldn't find it right away, allowing LaRoche just enough time to scamper in.

And then, after all the chipping, the Dodgers started blasting.

They untied it with a five-run eighth against what is clearly one of the league's leakiest bullpens. The inning began with four consecutive hits and ended with a two-run single by Andre Ethier, giving the Dodgers a season-high 18 hits.

In this series alone, the Dodgers scored 19 runs and batted a collective .356 (36 for 101), raising their season average from .256 to .264.
