All speculation of Pat Gillick

Pat Gillick (born August 22, 1937) is the current general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies.

 today.

But just as quickly, Gillick was replaced on the rumor mill by Theo Epstein Theo Nathan Epstein (born December 29, 1973 in New York City) is the Executive Vice President/General Manager of the Boston Red Sox. In November 2002, the Red Sox made him the youngest GM in the history of Major League Baseball by hiring him at the age of 28. , who chose principle over paycheck when he resigned Monday as Boston's general manager.

Those rumors were valid to a point. Indications are that the Dodgers have contacted Epstein, who like Dodgers owner Frank McCourt

grew up in the Boston area. But Epstein, who continues to consider taking at least a year away from baseball, told the Boston Herald The Boston Herald is a tabloid format newspaper, though not a tabloid in the traditional sense, and is the smaller of the two big dailies in Boston, Massachusetts (the other being The Boston Globe).  via e-mail on Tuesday night that he has had no contact with the Dodgers.

The Dodgers' chances of getting him probably hinge on Verb 1. hinge on - be contingent on; "The outcomes rides on the results of the election"; "Your grade will depends on your homework"

Epstein's willingness to ply his trade in another market, one that isn't as pressure-packed as Red Sox-crazy Boston. But even if Epstein is interested, it isn't clear whether he would be the leading candidate for the job. This despite a report on ESPN's ``Cold Pizza'' on Tuesday morning claiming that Epstein will end up with the Dodgers at a salary higher than what he was making in Boston, which wouldn't be difficult, considering his salary was no higher than about $350,000.

when it comes to the search process, refusing to even reveal the names of those contacted. Within hours of former GM Paul DePodesta's firing on Saturday, speculation abounded of a possible alignment of Gillick as GM, Orel Hershiser as an assistant GM being groomed to take over after Gillick ran the organization for a few years, and Bobby Valentine as manager.

Four days later, Gillick is gone. Hershiser probably wouldn't accept such a position under any GM other than Gillick because Gillick's age (68) would make him a short-term GM. And Valentine, who made $3 million in American dollars this year while managing the Chiba Lotte Marines to the Japan Series title, probably is far beyond the Dodgers' price range. He also is a finalist for the managerial vacancy in Tampa Bay.

--Former Dodgers coaches join Pirates: Pitching coach Jim Colborn and bench coach Jim Lett are following former Dodgers manager Jim Tracy to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The hirings, announced Tuesday, had been expected since Tracy was hired as Pittsburgh's manager on Oct. 11.
